I would also recommend signing your band up on bandcamp.com- their embeddable media player lets you sell/give away downloads right from your facebook page, and people don't have to leave facebook to listen to your songs. I don't know about you guys, but one of my pet peeves is an embedded window that takes me to another site. Seems every other "promotional tool" out there is really designed to take people to their site- these guys are way more artist friendly, and seem to truly care more about offering a useful service than building their numbers.

Not really. Two of the guys who've posted have over 800 likes - I wouldn't call them desperate. It's just an easy way to get some free likes for your band while helping some of your bass brothers out at the same time.
As was said, just having a few inflated likes can do a lot for you. There are a few venues around this area (as well as bands I've communicated with) that won't hire you unless you have X number of likes on Facebook. Likewise, just appearing to be a bigger deal than you really are can actually make you become a big deal in this day and age, as everyone wants to know about the next big thing before it hits (if that makes sense).
So far I've gotten my band 12 likes for maybe 5 minutes worth of work - not bad if you ask me
