Does it work if you put it over all the strings instead? If it does, then it can also double as an open-string-mute if you need.

Do me a favor Robus. Tell me what brand, size and where you got those strings. That color string binding looks identical (or nearly so) to the original strings that came on my 1966 Fender Precision that I bought new. I'd love to have that original color binding look back on the almost 49 year old thumper. Thanks!

Those are Fender 9050L stainless steel flatwounds, 45-100. I've had them on the bass for about a year. Very nice tone and feel. I see them on Amazon right now. They come in a green and black package.

I avoid this by cutting as little as possible off the strings. Some string I don't cut at all if they fit the whole post without overlapping.

Nope. As noted in many, many threads here, the string should wind downwards on the tuning post, coming off the post as close to the headstock as possible. That in turn gives you more break angle over the nut. You should also press down on the string on both sides of the nut to create a "witness point".

As far as string length - I (and many others) cut the string about four (4) finger widths past the tuner, then make the bend in the end of the string, insert it in the post and wind downwards. You really don't need the whole length of the string as manufactured.

Not necessarily, but it could create a problem that can be eliminated before it begins. I've had short cut ones that were not a problem, but many that were. No need creating potential problems. Plus, you can always cut more off if it's too long, but very difficult to add string, if it's cut too short.

This is not a problem when the neck has a scarf joint and/or the headstock has an angle...

Yes this happened to me when I replaced a set of strings several gauges smaller than the original ones. As I have been replacing the bridges I have been using a “V” cut to allow for different gauges. I just have to keep it lubed so the string does not hang up.
