I'm with WildTurkey...does pickup placement make a bigger difference than body wood? I'd love to know.

If I had a magic wand, I would put two MIJ 75 RI Ash Jazzes in front of me, identical in every way except one with 60's pu placement, the other with 70s pu placement. I'd spank them both red and know for sure.

There is a lot of sense to the argument that a pickup is like a microphone. and we all know how critical mic placement is, proximaty effect, frequency combing, phase cancellation, etc.

But the tone differences between alder and ash are equally pronounced and recognizable.

My Highway One (which is American) does not have the CNC hole or the neck pup routing. If I liked the look without the pick guard I could do it...just don't like the look compared to a tort pick guard.

I believe American Series basses have the CNC hole - anyone confirm?

yes, current american standards have the CNC hole as well as the routing from the control cavity to the pickup route.
