I'm interested in a rack mounted preamp/power amp rig. I know nothing about them, however. I've tried a few searches, but not really coming up with anything. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
Once you read the FAQ you could direct your question in a more specific way. Let me start by asking you what makes you interested in a rack rig? Is it the power? Is it the versitility? Is it simply curiosity?
Mainly curiosity. I'm having a rough time finding my tone through regular bass heads, so I thought I'd look into rack gear. It definetely doesn't seem to be the best choice for someone on a budget, however. I love the sound of an SVT-CL (only SVT I've played), but they are too expensive for me. Maybe a rack setup could get me close to that tone/power for less cash?
I used rack rigs for a very long time. In the last couple of years I haven't played as much so switched to a light all-in-one. But, for me, nothing can compare to the versatility of a rack rig. Heck, I'm thinking about going back to one.
My advice: Get you a plx1804 amp and a sansamp RBI. After playing with it a while put your RBI up for sale or keep it and venture into other sounds. The sky (meaning your pocketbook) is the limit. Add and subtract cabs as you need.
In addition to the many very good threads already here on the subject, please check out the "preamps" link in my sig. Much info there you may find useful.
A two-channel power amp is essentially two separate power amps in one box. Bridging is where the amp is designed to (in simple terms) add the power of one channel to the power of the other, running one channel of audio through both and then out one output to the speaker.
So if I can get away with 500 watts of power in my playing stuations using a head (LMII, 700RBII) through a 4 ohm cab, will it be safe to assume I would need a 500 watt @ 4 ohm power amp? Would I need more or less power when using a seperate preamp and poweramp? Thanks for the help so far, guys!
Watts are watts. The only difference is in how efficiently the signal is transferred with those watts, which is why people make a rumpus about "tube watts". But between a head and a separate power amp, watts are just watts.
