Double Bass please recommend some cabs

Please help me upgrade or add to my rig. I am predominantly an upright player. I use a 2-channel Acoustic Image Coda Series IV. It delivers 300w at 8ohms and 650 at 4ohms. It can handle most of my gigs. I also have a 4ohm 12" Schroeder cab that I use as an extension or alone with just the Coda head. This works really well on bigger stages when I need a little more punch and a faster bloom to the note. I also play some bass guitar (95 p bass). Some gigs I am doubling. I put both URB and BG through the 2-channel Coda. I am finding on bigger stages that I am not getting fat enough tone from the bass guitar. In these situations when I am doubling, I find the upright sounds just fine but I am still wanting more from the bass guitar. I am going for an old school vintage BG tone, not loud, not overly distorted. I am thinking of adding or just using another cab alone like a 15" or 2x10" or some other configuration. Please suggest speaker sizes and/or combinations and brands names. Price range below $500. I am planning to go out there and try as many cabs as I can find that are candidates for my situation. It seems you are looking for two different things from the cabinet. A good upright sound, which you seem to get. And a satisfying BG sound (old school vintage BG tone). An improvement in one might compromise the other. Schroeder looks like very serious cabinets. So perhaps the solution is to add something that gives you what you want in the BG signal chain. An old school preamp or compressor or something, others might chime in. Also make sure you have tried all the possibillities that the amps eq gives. For old school sound, I would turn up gain on the preamp, try adding low mids and subtracting highs on the eq (perhaps also lows). To make it less "hifi". But you might have done that.

I’d look at tweaking the signal chain first - you’ve got a really nice rig already.

When doubling, I use a SansAmp ParaDriver with my P bass. Fattens up any MBOL rig nicely.

It’s also great with DB - use the Blend control, dial in just a little bit to hear yourself over loud drums. It’s on my tiny pedal board or in my gig bag as a backup preamp/DI.

Agreed,

The current Coda amplifiers are 650 Watts into 4 ohms, that Schroder cabinet should be pretty earsplitting at 4 ohms. My guess is that the EQ on the AI isn't what you're looking for and

the Sans Amp should really help with that. Acoustic Image amps are designed for transparency which isn't necessarliy what you want with a Bass Guitar.

Yes, I can get blistering loud with 4ohms into the Schroeder. So volume is really not an issue. It's the frequency I think. I want a warm fat p bass tone. Even with some EQ'ing I am not really getting what I want. I'm going to try a preamp. A reasonable and inexpensive first step.

I’ve recently been using a series 4 coda, adding an Eden 210 or a bag end 210 for bass guitar. Both older model cabinets. The sound is ok...powerful enough, but not the TONE you’d get with something like a tube SVT.

I always felt like the coda is guitar players amp, well powered, but an inefficient cab for bass. Try the AI ten 2 cab- it is a huge improvement. I usually run my AI head with a pair of acme B1s. No shortage of low end with that ......

When I have to double I use th Hartke Bass Attack pedal first generation. With a short scale bass with flats I got a great fat tone and could add some grit as well. I don’t have a two channel amp so my solution was to run this to the aux input on GB Shuttle 3.0. I would only use this pedal for electric bass.

I've always felt that way as well, even though the Corus is the amp AI advertizes as their Guitar offering. I had to look that up. The Acme Low B1's are great cabinets, it's so amazing that they have so much definition and low end for their small footprint.

I have a diy cab designed to sound good for double bass. If I use it with electric bass the main change I have to make is add a peak somewhere around 80 to 100 hz. That peak on it’s own is the difference between the low end I like in db and eb. My amp has a parametric eq that helps me do that. There are plenty of pedals and pre that will help you do that and you probably won’t need another cab
