Then it's a good thing you stayed away from classical instruments. An intermediate level violin is expected to be approximately 2k+ new. Professional grade violins are generally around 20K+ with vintage violins selling for almost 9mil. A lot of orchestras wont take a musician that doesn't have a professional grade instrument. Even more famous ones require certain vintages to maintain a certain uniform sound.

A decent upright piano can be anything from 2k-10k. A baby grand around 20K+ with full sized concert hall grands going around 100k+. That's just new. Vintage can get more ridiculous.

Now granted a bass guitar hasn't been around for hundreds of years. But we aren't paying 20k+ for a professional grade gig able instrument either.

A lot of the wealthy people I have been fortunate to know in the past, are generally miserly bastards who know how to pinch every cent from everything. They didn't get rich off of luck alone after all. If they were to even consider something like this they would probably send an expert or two to examine the investment in question and go from there.

Seeing as at the time I looked at it, it just had a single offer it's going to be a while if ever at that price tag. While the finish isn't my particular cup of tea, if it is what it claims to be then if I had the money I'd get it after doing some investigating and appraising of it. "Worth" and "appraised value" are two totally different beasts. If someone is willing to drop the money to purchase it then I hope they get exactly what is advertised. Then again, someone who usually has the resources to commit to a purchase of this caliber, is usually someone you don't want to scam on an easily traceable medium.

Sorry I know we weren't supposed to debate over the cost and all but I kinda felt it a little essential to kinda throw in some more information that can be examples of what the market can and may head towards. We should be fortunate that we have a relatively affordable instrument to play comparatively with many of the other instruments out there.
