Double Bass Plugging an mp3 player into an amp

There are a number of times at practice sessions where it would be useful if I could plug my mp3 player into my amp and play a track for the group.

I got the appropriate cables from Radio Shack, and it works. But just barely. The sound is off -- quite thin and thready.

I'm guessing that the output of the average mp3 player is not matched up right to the input on a bass amp.

Has anyone seen a widget that will do the job? Or maybe one of our electronics experts can dream one up?

That shouldn't be the case IMHO. Lots of practice amps have stereo RCA inputs that allow you to do just what you're talking about (is that already what you're doing?). I can even run an MP3 player into the back of my Sony boombox via a 1/8" stereo cable with terrific results.

So are you going stereo 1/8" plug into MONO 1/4" plug? Could all the adapters you have to use be sucking your volume and tone?

I've been happy with the results jacking into the effects return. I've used two different players this way. A Tascam Bass Trainer and an iPhone. Although I usually go through a small mixer.

I bought all the required cables and 'Y' adaptors to run my MP3 1/8" stereo into 1/4" mono from Radio Shack as well and it works perfectly. You might have a bad cable or input.

Yep. Something about that combination. I got a cable from GC and it works fine now. Thanks all.
