I hate pick guard mounted jacks. I always feel like I’m gong to break them. I prefer a side jack.

TBH I prefer it on the edge at the bottom!
(can't use a right-angle plug with this countersunk jack)

Beat me to it. Before owning one I thought the Ibanez design was a good one, and it is if that is all you are playing as it works well routing the lead through a strap.

I would prefer it on the edge as a right-angled plug still works well and doesn't create a hassle when changing to a fender shaped object with the jack on the front.

I like my plug going in the lower front. I’m just more comfortable with that.

Groping around to find the jack hole is always a bit of aggrivation, so I have to say I prefer a top mount jack, but I really don't know why more bass guitars don't have BOTH. There's nothing wrong with letting players take their pick, and even provide the alternate jack location if the cord they have works better with the other jack location.
The best of both worlds?
Unless you're switching active electronics it would be a great feature to have on passive basses.
