Best technical bassist actually? Probably some metal dude. Evan Brewer springs to mind.

Personally I would plump for Juan Alderete over everyone on that list. Perfect mix of technical ability, groove, experimentation and decent lines. Other bassists might be more technically capable, but I don't think they're nearly as well-rounded musicians.

I don't know. A lot of rock is blues based so to me its not the most technical thing out there. Not that they haven't come up with some pretty neat bass! Technical to me means music that has lots of bizarre progressions and rhythmic changes. That's why I voted Squier. He is a big influence on me but most the guys like JPJ, Entwhistle and Jack Bruce probably had a bigger impact on my playing. But I don't think the music they did was as technical as something by Yes or Rush etc...
