Poll? coolest basslines

my current favorite bassline is TALK DIRTY from the john entwistle solo album TOO LATE THE HERO. 8 string bass played like guitar parts. damn he was the bast [next to rick price] in my opinion. no hate posts please

+1 to sir psycho sexy. First time i heard that song, I almost crapped my pants its so funky. Definitely the nastiest, filthiest, "dirtier than roseanne's crack" funk song ever made.

-Jungle Boogie - Kool & the Gang ("Kool" Bell)
-Natural Joe - Primus (Les Claypool) - someone had to mention les sooner or later.
-Ready Or Not - Herbie Hancock
-Funkify your Life - The Meters

Ive stuck to 'funkiest bassline ever' rules, but that just reflects my tastes atm. theres plenty of others.

jamiroquai - manifest destiny, canned heat, too young to die, love foolosophy
average white band - the price of the dream, work to do
donny hathaway - voices inside (everything is everything)
marvin gaye - what's going on
tower of power - what is hip
chic - le freak
herbie hancock - secrets

and oh soo many more. those are just some of my favorites.

As far as "cool" goes. Rappers delight by the Sugar Hill Gang Of course that was a sample and I don't remember where it actually originated from.

it was orginally from 'good times' by chic and sister sledge, with the great bernard edwards on bass

theres way to many to choose from, so two that pop into my head at the minute are, hes the greatest dancer by chic and sister sledge, and i want you, by the brothers johnson, very cool bass line

I thought that album pretty much sucked when I bought it 25 years ago, but that was before I learned to play bass. Maybe I should dust off the old turntable and give it another listen. :)

Chili,

I'm feelin' ya on "Mista Cool". One of the most under-rated Brothers Johnson pieces ever, imho.

I'll add.....

  • Waterfalls - TLC (RIP Left Eye)
  • Just The Two Of Us - Grover Washington Jr.
  • School Days - Stanley Clarke
  • Good Times - Chic (think about it.....how many times has this been sampled & ripped off? Is it 'cause of the guitar?)
  • Get Up Offa That Thang - James Brown (with a teenager named Bootsy Collins on bass)

Peace,

James
