Poll? coolest basslines

DblG said:
Here's some I think are cool:

I Wish - Stevie Wonder
Pygmy Twylyte-->Dummy Up - FZ
What Is Hip - TOP
Southbound - Allman Bros
Memphis Underground - Herbie Mann
Chameleon - Herbie Hancock(?) I have a cool version off of Buddy Rich's "Tuff Dude"

gg

I just heard this today and reminded me again of how much I like the bassline to Midnight Train To Georgia. Mmmm, it's just right.
Oh, and I thought I'd quote myself just to bring my old picks out of hibernation. :smug:

Supprized noone has mentioned these..
soon as I pick up my bass I play these repetitivly

Califonication - RHCP (Love that song, pretty easy and fun)
Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet child of mine - Guns and Roses.
The balard of chasey lain - Bloodhound gang (just for the novilty value and it makes me smile)
Supermario brothers! lol (find tab in this forum, its great to play)
Little Green bag by er... I forget. its off beginning of Resiouvor dogs. Learnt hammers to that song and still love it.

may as well add mine, couldn't be a7$ed to read them all just yet.(feeling lazy)

The awakening- Primus (Les Claypool or God)
+1 Traveling Without Moving (Stu Zender) (great to play)
Hysteria - Muse (Chris Wolstenholme)
Woodpecker From Mars - Faith No More (Billy Gould)
Keep On Running - Spencer Davis Group (Muff Winwood?) just grooves
Naked in the Rain - RHCP (Flea)
It's cool to hang Out with your Ex and got it at the delmar - Senseless Things (Morgan Nicholls)

i could go on

lotsa +1, and some simple basslines that make the song. . .

Tell Me Something Good -- Rufus

Wild Nights -- Van Morrison, but esp. Michelle NdegéOcello on Mellencamp's cover)

I Want You Back -- Jackson Five, w Wilton Felder (?) on bass

Waiting Room --Fugazi

Free Man in Paris -- Joni Mitchell w/ Jim Hughart on bass

Big +1 on "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5, and yes that is Wilton Felder on bass. That's my all-time favorite bass line. Have you ever noticed that there are no drums during the verses? The groove hangs mostly just on the bass line -- cool stuff.

+1 on "Midnight Train to Georgia". Bob Babbitt is the man.

"I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie Wonder.

-1 on U2's "With Or Without You". Sure, the song is great, but it's certainly not because of that bass line. Adam Clayton is probably the least interesting bass player of any major modern rock band. He just doesn't seem to care.

The first bassline I remember learning was Distant Early Warning-Rush. It's nice! After learning just about every Geddy Lee bass line that exists, including live versions, i branched out a little.

Bob Marley & the Wailers-Could You be Loved & I Shot the Sheriff
Miles Davis-So What & All Blues
All things Jimmy Garrison

Too many to list. I guess that makes none of them the "coolest", but they're all very cool.

I like a lot of stone temple pilots bass lines ...

Phish .. Down with Disease is a cool one.

Cream - Sunshine of your love .. simple one for noobs to enjoy like me.

You ever want to hear something out of this world in the way of bass ..
Yanni - The Rain Must Fall.
It's on his Live from the Acropolis album. This guy jams for about 2 or 3 minutes of the song (part with piano .. and then about a minute and half on his own) ..

Yes. He wrote it. He has songwriting credits on over 75% of Pink Floyd's catalouge. (And i don't think he would want his name on the stuff that came after he left either.)

Thanks... I honestly didn't know. There's been so much talk over the last 15 years about how Gilmour played so many of Roger's basslines for him back in the day, that I have trouble keeping everything straight.
