The poll is not about "best", but your preferred tone

I like a mostly dry / growly / hint of mwah sound. I get it on my Tobias Growler 4 String Fretless. Wenge fingerboard (iirc) with just finish (no epoxy or anything), swamp ash body, active pre / Barts quadcoil pickup, bolt on. Great bass.
...to what I´d want from a fretless tone.

Like this... and there it was, instantly.
ok, the tone - not the chops![]()
And a bit of Percy too:
I like Jaco's tone, and believe it or not, I like Les Claypool's on a number of tunes, but my "ideal" fretless tone is without a doubt Sean Malone's sound on Cynic's "Focus."
Amazing record, that one. One of the only cd's I was a**l-retentive enough to rip as a set of FLAC files.

I'm with Debased on this. I love a throaty/dry sound but with sustain. I move around alot with my right hand though when I want a different sound.I go for an articulate, growly/aggressive fretless sound with nice woody, organic tone...
wow, very good poll.
