the local store i'm devoted too is a polytone dealer, and they have a 10 year old lil brute, so i may get that. also, are polytone pickups any good?

Double Bass Polytone questions

I should say I've used several different p/u's on my DB, but not a Polytone. That said, I could be wrong, but I think there are several types of DB pickups available today that in general would outperform the Polytone. I am thinking of pickups like the Full Circle, Rev Solo, Realist, Bass Max, Underwood. There are more. Here's a good starting point for reference. Go about halfway down the page for the section on pickups and mics.

The old polytone bar is hands down the best pick up I have used. Peter Kowald turned me on to it. He had an amazing sound. Through the old polytone amps you get that twanky '70s sound - through new amps like a little GK they sound natural and amazing. They have a lot of volume. It is best to use it at an angle from the bridge foot to the center rather than straight across.
I had an old Polytone bar pickup for a minute, and it didn't sound very good or have much volume. To be fair, I had it placed straight across the bridge.
I have a brass one. It is great Arco or Pizz. It can be hard to find a good one since they are old, if they are not tight enough can start cutting out. Mine was not grounded so I had to add a ground wire to it. I am due for a new one, so I am on the look out.
