Double Bass POPS ROSIN

Mike Goodbar said:
<<snip>> especially in summer, because it would end up in a sticky pool on the seat of my car or inside the accessory pocket of my case. I would still use it as a winter rosin, that is, if I were still playing gigs that required the bow.<<unsnip>>.

I have to admit my inexperience with bows and rosin. Still trying to get the feeling for the proper grip...and this Pops is the first rosin I've ever tried.

So I'm confused about this talk about Pops being soft. My cake is so hard I can hardly get it onto the hair. Yesterday I tried holding the cube of rosin over a light bulb to soften it up a bit to get it to apply to a new bow. Next time I'm in the violin shop I may look to see if they stock anything else besides Pops. My teacher uses Pops and seems to like it so I'm not sure what to think...

I use Pops most of the time and I don't find it to be too messy, although it will glaze up the bow hair after a while. All of my teachers used Pops, including my current teacher who plays with the Florida Orchestra. He says the whole bass section uses it. To each his own.
