Q: Are they rootsy focused by design or is that more a reflection of whats going on in music these days?

Backyard shows are very big here in southern California especially in the punk/alt/ska bands genres. They are NOT as organized as this seems to be.

I daresay, though, that in my jetlagged state I read the title as "Porschefest" and expected a different set of photos.

Yeah there were several lawn, driveway, and sidewalk acts as well. When you have 175 acts, that’s a lot to contain!

Born and raised there. Was always some very smart and very strange people there. Never seemed to be a lot of middle ground. Economically too. You were either a rich outsider working at a university or a destitute local. Still, I have many good memories from before all the big chain retailers rolled in.

I have a couple of really close friends (former bandmates) who moved there many years ago, due to the vibrant music scene. One of them is now a Councilman and recently returned from a string of gigs in Amsterdam.

I cannot see that happening much in California. At least in the cities I've lived in. Around here, people don't have neighbors, but other people living near them. That's the mentality that sums it up.

old thread, but....Porchfest’17 . of note are the two guys that aren’t me...Chris Broadwell with the Tele...long-time owner of Ithaca Guitar Works , and David Borisoff , founder and Owner of Hipshot Products on steel. Great band mates for MANY reasons!

I was a regular at IGW pre-COVID; bought some items from them “curbside” but it’s just not the same. Haven’t seen Chris in forever. (seems like it, at least.) Never met David but bumped into another bass player (Walt?) that works at Hipshot.

T’Burg, huh!? I’ve chatted with TBers in Seneca Falls and Binghamton, but you are the closest yet. I’ve only been in the area since 2017, but playing with Dave Richman (Poorboys, Grassanova) since I got here. I bet we know a lot of the same people. Shoot me a PM sometime, we’ll connect when the air is fresher and the grass is greener.

Hey Al,
I arrived in Ithaca in 1951, but I don’t remember too much except getting spanked by a nurse ( role reprised in 1972). If you look through the trees behind us you’d see Fall Creek Elementary, of which I am a proud alumnus. Some of those homes that hosted PorchFest were on my paper route as a kid. A chambered Supro and a Silvertone don’t buy themselves....Fall Creek school was were I learned about music...and girls, developed my sense of playground justice and learned to smash a hanging curveball.
I can’t imagine a better place to grow up...In 1964 my band mates & I snuck in to Barton Hall to see the Stones play an afternoon concert, they packed up and played in Syracuse that evening. Butterfield, Janis, the Animals, Blues Project, Village Fugs, BS&T, Byrds, Dylan, Donovan, Supremes, Tops, Marvin....all part of the soundscape of my young life.
As my friend Paul Simon said “ Born at the Right Time” and place, for sure.
