Porcupine Tree returns

I didn't realize Cobham had toured with Gabriel, but I knew he played on Gabriel's Passion album and soundtrack.

Secret World Tour - Wikipedia

"Jazz drummer Billy Cobham filled in for Manu Katché in May 1994 for a few dates when Katché was out sick."

It was longer than May. I was at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark July 1994. 3rd of July I think. He didn't have that elaborate stage production with him, it was an outdoor festival. Many people on stage. I didn't recognize Cobham until PG introduced him at the end as "on drums, the king of drums .. Billy Cobham" I raised my eyebrows and went "wait what..!?" no one else in the crowd cared. Didn't hear it was him in the playing, didn't see/detect him from the way back on stage.

I guess many people went in and out during that tour with PG, and no one really cared. It sounded the same, they could've pulled it off with anyone methinks.

Ok, since this thread seems to derail into more Peter Gabriel than Porcupine Tree let's connect the dots...Randy McStine singing "here comes the flood" together with Adam Holzman on keys. I have no problem with McStine can pull off the background harmony voices for Porcupine Tree.

What I find peculiar with this touring line up, is that I thought that if one should augment with tourng lineup anyway you need more people. I've checked out now Randy McStine who was definitely under my radar before. As with PT's old touring member John Wesley who sang background vocals, PTs harmony vocals on records was more layered. I was always a bit irked when they pulled off "Blackest Eyes" live and SW had to stop finalizing the sentence to get in line with the chorus refrain and sing "swim with me into the blackest eyes..:" thing, in harmony with John Wesley. I do not know if Nate Navarro sings backup vocals, but I think PT needs that because on studio, they filled up quite a lot with 3 part harmony vocals (their most famous song "Trains" has that middle section with medieval harmony lines). All these things has always came out a little bit short whenever playing live. McStine can very well do the singing too, but they need one more with backup vocals. I do not know if Natan Navarro possesses this talent too. SW did all the harmonies in studio anyways. They would need a backup vocal bass player too methinks. So those 2 can do the harmony vocals and SW do the voice leading things.

Talking about "acrimonious", there must've been something between SW and Colin Edwin too, since he wasn't invited this time around. I bet that that one causes a lot of drama, speculations on the internet. But what do we know? Just move on.

Anyone else heard Nate Navarro do vocals? Not lead but backup vocals?

FWIW, McStine can play bass too it seems...

According to everyone involved, in various interviews, when PT split Edwin just didn't keep in touch with the others. He spent a lot of time in Australia and was there isolating when the others started getting together again. Hesmovedon.

The new Porcupine Tree album Closure/Continuation was released a couple of days ago and it is fantastic. Ten new Porcupine Tree songs after all these years is a dream come true.

Steven Wilson plays bass on the tracks. In addition to his many talents, there are excellent and very creative basslines throughout the album.

It's weird, the CD is not available on Amazon. I have theirs and Apples streaming service and I can listen there, but I still dig buying CDs.

Great footage of Steven playing bass (a spector coda 5) in studio and talking about his style and approach to bass. Very interesting stuff, what a band.

He does a good job on bass but I think it they could have better hired another bass player for the unity of the band. Now it’s too much Steve Wilson and the live player has to follow his parts instead of his own parts which makes it feel more like a SW solo project.

What was the reason Colin left the band? Does it have to do anything with the above, that Wilson got too much in control?

I feel Colin is missing in a big way. Yes the album is quite good, but he brings a feel that is all his own. It's missing. I am a huge PT fan, but I feel disappointed. Was all stoked about tickets until I heard about Colin. Now I just don't seem to care. Especially if I have to drive 6 hours. No Wesley either. I can't be the only one...

And yes I have seen SW as well as PT live. I've seen SW do PT songs with his band and they just don't quite have what PT did. That band was Magic!!

I still prefer the first PT line up with Chris Maitland on drums. I lost interest after the Lightbulb Sun album.

I honestly love everything they did especially starting with Signify. I see you what you mean about how their sound changed. Not better or worse to me, just different. Certainly Gavin added something. Very few players like him, but then again they didn't do anything like Dark Matter or Russian On Ice in the later years, so yes, I get it.
