Besides the Hartke I mentioned, the TC Electrnics 200 watt mini head is extremely portable. 200 watts at 4ohms, 130 at 8.
Of course you'll need a small cab, but that shouldn't be too big of a deal, and if where you're playing has a backline, you're set.
That gives you room to expand too. There's one going through an old Peavey 4x12 bass cab (4ohms) that I use with one group of guys that I play with. Plenty of volume if you ever need it.
Edit: I reread your initial post, which makes me think that I may be getting ahead of things regarding the expansion possibilities.
