I've always loved the look of jazz pickup covers and I'm on the fence on whether to buy them or not. I'm new to basses and just started to learn slap bass. Will the pickup covers obstruct playing, like the palm or wrist hitting the covers?

You just have to be very controlled in the open space that you have.

I love the look of the pickup covers so would prefer them staying on. But will playing more towards the neck alter the sound a lot?
Depends on the bass and the pickup covers.
Marcus Miller. One of the best slappers out there.
The cover on the neck pickup makes a perfect resting place for your wrist. Marcus used it for exactly that reason, supposedly. It works great!
When I buy a Fender or Squier I typically install pickup and bridge covers. Note to FMIC - please drill pilot holes for covers on your basses! Surely 4 little holes isn't hard for your fancy-schmancy CNC equipment!

Well, Marcus used it because he didn't know that he could just take stuff off the bass. So he learned to play that way and is just too used to it now. Not really because he thought it was a great resting place.
Although it sure makes for a good resting place for your wrist
