Possible to re-engineer?

Thirty years ago my band released and independent cassette. I still have the cassette and I am going to convert to a digital copy. I left music for 25 years, so I am completely ignorant of the current recording methods. We recorded the original on an old four track. Anyway, would it be possible to re-engineer the old recording if I bought the correct software? I am not sure if this is even a stupid question. Would love to give it a try and I welcome any recommendations.

If its mixed to stereo, you will be limited as to how much you can manipulate it.

If you have access to the original four individual tracks, you would have much more latitude and control.

My buddy has the original masters. If I get into it I'll see if he'll let me borrow them.
