I really dug the two Valentis I tried- particularly the silver one. The Sadowsky P5 was a great bass- I don't like the classic sound of a P that much, so it wasn't for me, but the bass itself was light, played great, and had that P thickness to its sound at every knob turn. I didn't get to plug it in, but AJ's Zon fretless felt great- the neck was really nice (I had a Zon 6 once that I sold because the neck profile was too flat for me).

What basses did you like?
4. The Sheldon 6 with one of the best fretless that I have ever played I would put that up there in the Citron category...Just so smooth, it made want to break out the realbook. It I was more of a fretless guy this would be my #1

Was that a Sheldon Dingwall you're referring to, or mine? Great complement so i gots to know.

I really dug the Valenti Blue Relic 5 string and the Silver Valenti. I want to buy one but can't decide on which one(and no I can't buy both, wish I could), I also liked Andy's Zon Fretless. I really liked Basswave's homemade 4 with the Status graphfite neck. And I liked Rob's Sadowsky. And I agree with basswave it didn't feel like 20mm.

My favorite basses from the New England GTG

1-Nino's silver 5
2-someones Sadowsky 5-(the one with the slightly less spalted top than David's) I swear that one felt like it was made of air it was so light. (actually-its the one Glen is playing in the last pic in post #52 from Nino)
3-Basswave's homemade 4 with the Moses neck-although I found it a little neck-heavy, it freakin' KICKS!!!
4-David's EB Big Al- I was having fun with all the controls
5-Dan's Human Base 5. I've always wanted to try one of those and this was the first time I've ever seen one in person.

1. standard forward pluck (upstroke)
2. backwards (downstroke)
2. a muted one - he hits the string and leaves his finger there
3. another variant where he plucks (forward) but is muting another another finger/hand/etc
5. dangit.. I forget the last one!

We should get Andy to review the footage!

He combines those up and uses them on all his fingers and his thumb and most of them lend themselves to leading into another one either on the same string or another string.. I was sitting a couple feet from him staring intently at his hand trying to figure it out before I asked.. (actually, I've been trying to do that for years)

That was a great question (and a thorough, thoughtful answer by Michael). I, too, was trying to figure out which hands/fingers where making which notes.

Actually, all the questions elicited great insight from Michael as to his technique, approach to composition and thoughts on music in general.

Was the fifth stroke more or less a pop?

What basses did you like?



2. CIJ 70's re-issue jazz with the ash body. (It was a $250 craiglist score) it was unreal and sounded killer to me, heavy but just played and sounded fantastic. (Probably the cheapest bass there and if I found it 'for me and my playing' the second most useful tool in the room. (I cannot remember the name of the gentleman that owned this...but great find).

Luke my apologies...I absolutely was referring to yours.

I pretty open with my opinion your frettless play like butter, no joke. Your neck profile just feels comfortable and the general acoustic tone to me (unplugged) has a very musicial upper mid presence to it that I love in a frettless.

I don't know what I did not get a chance to try any of your fretted material. (I missed that and the Nordy but pretty much tried everything else that interested me).

If I ever had the right gig 'steady' gig that I needed that type instrument then I would be knocking on your door first.

This bass was my favorite. Moses Graphite Neck, Warmoth Swamp Ash J body, Nordy MM p/u, Bart Preamp. The neck was super thin and felt awesome!!!!!

This bass was surprisingly sweet. Great neck, very versatile and sounded great in every p/u setting I had it in .

I really wanted to play this bass but I didn't have a chance.

Here is some info for you guys interested in the Valenti Bass giveaway.

There are 2 (possibly 3) Valenti's to win:

One is my personal Valenti, the Green 51 P Bass with the Nordstrand passive pup. It's basically brand new; I rarely play it, but love it just the same!

The other Valenti is the choice of one of the 2 that Nino has offered us.

I know that $60 a head may seem like a lot, but when you add up the room, the food, the basses, etc, we actually need about 56 entries to make this work for a 2 bass giveaway.

If we don't hit that number, I'll have to figure something out: probably 40 entries would do for the room and for one of the Valenti's from Nino himself. Basically, the more deposits, the more giveaways.

75 entries is kind of the magic number where we can give a choice of the 3 Valenti's.

At this moment we are at 23 entries!!! Please note, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ATTEND THE GTG TO WIN A BASS.
