Post Count?

I saw the new sticky at the top and was wondering:

Does anyone actually care about their (or anyone else's) post count? I don't even pay attention to them and, prior to this post, couldn't have told you mine. Is it really that much of a deal? I'd assume that a person is just as capable of posting a "zero-quality" post in Basses (I might have read a few) as they are in Off Topic. If the logic is that this new post count rule will increase the value of TB content, then surely eliminating post counts altogether would do that much more good, right? Let's do it. Write your congressman.

I'm okay with removing OT posts from the post count.

Come to think of it, I'd be okay with removing the post count. Maybe a scale like

a lurker

Personally, I could do without continually hearing negative comments that the only reason people post in certain threads is to "boost their post count", like that is how one proves their worth as a bass player... or even a member of TB. Not only is it not true, it is insulting.

Shouldn't matter. But on Pbreview (a site much like this one, but for paintball), it was a big enough issue to cause the same policy change...over there, your post count was displayed under your name/avatar. The younger posters tend to place more importance on it than the older population.

As would I, especially if it's enough of a deal to warrant rule changes.

Rep could work over certain parts of the site.

General instruction, technique, could have some appreciation rating. That would allow newcomers to difference valuable contributing members from know-it-all users.

But so does lurking more.

I was under the impression that the number of posts each member had here did not matter, because you have to go to a persons profile page to view their number of posts rather than having that number posted beneath their username like on many other forums.

I really don't care how many posts other people have, except for stuff like buying and selling gear, where you want to see if someone is a newbie or if they have been around for a while.

I can see your point, but what's to stop that system from being misused? I agree that just plain reading more in certain areas helps separate the people who really know what they're talking about from "know it all" users.

I had posted a question in Amps a while back and a guy made the comment that I hardly ever post there and questioned if I even played bass. I'm thinking that my NOT posting in a forum I don't have much to add to is a good thing. Of course, I could drop a bunch of "+1" posts in there to get my super-important post count up....
