So you care still a little bit. Well, I couldn't care less.
Honestly I don't see what this will achieve, or how it will effect anyone.
TB is already one of the most mature forums where people don't pay much attention to post count.
I am not questioning the Site Administration's decision, in fact I applaud it. I wouldn't even care if post count was a feature that is erased all togheter from this forum.
I have a feeling that useless posts (that now still boosts your post count) are more found in other subforums. Off Topic is already off topic. But so many threads about subjects in their dedicated subforum tend to go off topic with the same kind of banter.
For example, this week I was interested in a bass by a certain brand. So in the Basses forum I checked out the "******* Club" thread number ##.
That thread has grown to thousand posts in a matter of 2 to 3 weeks (,and then naturally closed again and a mod started the next one).
So I had to wade through 1000 posts only to see about 10 to 15 pictures of that brand of bass I am interested in. (I was researching what colours I would like.) And a very low information/empty-posts ratio.
Not to call out the TB members who posted in that thread.
Like a few weeks the TB rules where streamlined. Especially was stressed that IBTL posts were not allowed. Good rule... I like it.
But I don't think people made IBTL posts to boost their post count. More like letting an OP or some members who messed up know that they caused a thread to get locked.

I'd tend to agree with this. But, the majority of my posts (especially since I stopped actively gigging) land in OT.Whether or not we have post counts or not doesn't bother me, but there are a couple of unspoken notions here that I don't particularly like. The first is that all the threads, posts, and tbrs that hang out here in OT are not as worthy as the song UNO threads, the 'recommend me a pedal', and what do you think about '(insert brand name) strings?' threads. The other vibe I'm getting here is that those that tend to haunt those threads and other forums are somehow more valued members than those who lurk in OT. TB is a great site, but to create a policy that implies that a whole forum, and all its posts is worthless (or rather what you say doesn't 'count') seems to be pithy and divisive at best. Like I said before, I really don't care about post count, even though I have one of the higher ones here, but I'd like to go down on record that to me OT, is the core of this site, and I feel a kind of brotherly (and sisterly) bond with the regulars here. While my first instinct is to shrug my shoulder and say 'so what?', I can't seem to shake the idea that this gesture is kind of mean spirited unless it's levied site wide. My two cents.

I rarely come into OT, unless it's football season in which case I can talk to other like-minded bassists about the NFL. There may be other occassions where a topic catches my eye and I check in (this thread is a good example), but generally OT holds minimal appeal to me.
I had no idea what my post count was until I just looked it up (5,035) because it's a meaningless statistic to me. I can see where it may mean something to others, but it really would never cross my mind to use post count as an opinion shaping tool or verification of my contributions, one way or the other.
I would guess that one of the reasons for the removal of OT counts is that TB is, after all, a bass forum. If someone is chatting about effects, amps, strings, whatever, at least it's related to bass & music in general. OT may be the only forum where that is not the case (Lobby excluded, of course).
There will always be more non-essential posts as compared to informative posts in any of the forums, but I would think that if the basis of the post was bass/music driven, at least it's meeting the spirit of the board. Threads about the merits of bacon vs. pork roll (one of the OT things that always catches my attention) is not essential to the TalkBass board.
OT is likely the most active forum on this board, so obviously it has great appeal to many TBers. I'd venture to say that it is also the most heavily moderated forum on this board, as well, and frequently must be policed by the mods to correct the sins of the rule violators.
As someone said above, this is one of the most mature and informative boards I have ever come across. While OT is entertaining to a large group, I doubt TalkBass was conceived to promote non-bass chatter. I wouldn't assume that the OT post count removal is a slap in the face or somehow demeaning to the OT contributors ..... it's just not in the spirit of the original intent behind TalkBass

Someone observed that there is probably more heavy moderation of Basses, Amps and Effects than in OT. I think that's probably right. I would be surprised if Amps or Effects saw the most most infractions handed out per post comapred to OT or the Lobby (althoguh I am sure the Lobby has the most threads closed vs threads posted ratio of all the forums).Interesting comments here regarding post counts ....

Since I only post in OT, I guess I add nothing of any value to TB.

i don't mind. TB is huge and one of the reasons it's so good is the fact that it keeps a lot of general boneheadedness at bay.
that said, OT has become my favourite part of the forums... and there is some good stuff here.

I find it slightly embarrassing that I'm so high on the post count list... perhaps I'll only post in OT now.

I agree with a lot of this, but something we need to keep in mind is that this is a site about bass and music - playing, equipment, technique, etc. I'm not sure I agree with ignoring OT posts from a person's post count (not that I really care about anyone's post counts), but I think the point is that very little to do with bass happens in OT. Other than the fact that most of us are bass players, it's otherwise pretty freakin' random. That said, a majority of my posts are in OT, and I find it to be one of the biggest reasons why TB contunes to be a habitual part of my daily life. To categorize OT posts as having less value to the site (which appears to me to be the reason for Admin's decision), I think this is probably true in relation to bass specifically, but many of the threads that happen daily in OT are highly valuable at a human level. IMO, TBOT is a community in the best sense of the word.
