This is the happiest I've ever been with any board layout. I removed the DD-3, Empress tap trem, Line6 DL-4, a newly purchased Malekko Chicklet (which sucks low end big-time), Punch Factory and the Micro POG.

3 new pedals take their place- Line6 M9, EHX MBS, and a Boss CS-3 (that’s right- a Boss compressor). The addition of the M9 allows for great flexibility. Right now I have it set with analogue chorus, synth strings, digital delay (dotted eights of course) seek wah, pattern trem, and spring verb- the M9 is a great way to help keep my pedal count reasonable. And the looper function makes parting with my DL-4 less hard.

The EHX Synth is just plain awesome- I think of it more as the most awesome distortion pedal ever than a convincing "real" synth, which fits my tastes a lot better any-who.

And finally the Boss CS-3- what can I say, I like the way it sounds- super squishy, a bit harsh, not transparent, and breathy. My board isn't really about subtlety, so it fits nicely. I would like to try a CS-2 to see how it compares- any thoughts about them?

This is also the easiest my board has ever been to operate- all pedals that need stompin' are at the bottom row (except for the Whammy and Wah). The Moog and EHX each have their own LS-2 for activation.

Signal order- Jazz Bass, Compressor, Whammy, Wah, Octave, Ring Mod, Synth, Distortion, M9, VT Bass (always on), Ampeg STV Pro-4.

Nice board. A couple questions and a comment.

I dig the Moog Ring Mod but it was too big to justify keeping for me given how much I used it. What do you use yours for and how often?

How is the modulation on the M9? I was thinking hard about getting one for a while and figured I'd use it for delay, reverb, looping and the whammy function but was unsure if I'd get much use out of phaser, chorus and flanger from it. Have you compared the Whammy ("Pitchglide" I think) on the M9 to the Digitech?

If you get a chance, try out the Humphrey modded CS-3. The stock model isn't bad but I was really impressed with the upgraded version.

As you are a Small Stone kind of guy, you may not dig on the phasers in the M9. I can get along without the Small Stone sound, but I would prefer it, and it isn't in here. The primary phaser has feedback and a setting for 4, 8, 12 stage but none of them are as pronounced an effect as a Small Stone IMO.

I do like some of the flangers and chori (sp?), but I have never been a huge user of chorus/ flange so my tastes may not be as discerning as yours. I've been meaning to get some sound clips up of various effects/ foibles/ fixes of the M13, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Life, you know.

I use the moog a lot for slow sweeping siren effects via the sine wave ocilator or moderate to fast square wave Robotalk-esque stutters. Most of its use is for creating sound textures that are not related to bass playing- before, after, or in between grooves. Its also a great tool for adding depth when looping.

As for the Pitch glide, its different than the Digitech. I much prefer the personality of the Digitech- tracking glitches and what sounds like a lower sample rate. The M9 tracks a bit more accurately though and sounds very clean, and glides very smoothly, all “improvements” compared to the Digitech. It also allows you to set the start and stop harmony giving Tool fans their 5th up- octave up crack fix. However, it seems pretty monophonic and really breaks up when playing chords like an analogue effect would. It could definitely make due in place of a Digitech, but since I have the space and prefer the sound, it won’t replace mine.

The modulation effects sound good. They are very tweak-able and retain low end well. I am not a huge modulation guy, but the M9 sounds very similar to the Phase90 and Boss and EHX chorus pedals I've played. The delays sound just like the DL-4 except they don’t self-oscillate as easily. The reverbs are very good as well. I really like the spring setting with a very high decay and time, with a pretty low mix- really great for filling out a fretless- turn up the mix for more of an “effect”. I don’t see myself buying any Modualtion effects as long as I own the M9 AND space allows- if I only need one mod effect, and cant bring a PT-Pro- that’s another story.

I've held off on buying an M9 because I've heard of issues upgrading the firmware and because I haven't liked the dirt or filter tones I've heard so far. So I was thinking that if I got one I'd still want dirt pedals and a filter or two.

I'll have to check out the modulation (and compression) for myself at some point. I don't think I would want to buy one just for reverb, delay and looping.

I doubt you'd be too satisfied with the comps. My guitar player has an M13 and I think everything sounds pretty damn good except the comps. The drives aren't amazing, but they're not bad. Mods weren't too bad either. The delays and particle/octo verbs are almost worth the price to me though...

The dirt patches really aren't bad, but they take a lot of tweaking to get a really good sound. It's a bit of a pain, but the tones are in there. I actually think the muff sounds really awesome. I think that if you have the unit in front of you and you can't get a single dirt sound you like, you're doing something wrong.

That being said, while it does have some good dirt sounds, it may not have the dirt sound you're looking for at a given moment. This would call for outside pedals of course.

I like the chorus, specifically the Dimension, but I'm not really a big modulation guy so... Tap tempo tremolo is also definitely nice to have packed in there.

Not big on filters so I can't comment much other than that I think it has some cool sounds, but it could easily be missing what you're looking for. None of the filters really have a sensitivity knob which is crazy to me:confused:

I don't like the comps:hmm:

I am currently using 3 spots to run one filter. If you drop the volume leading into the filter with the volume patch or a distortion of some sort, you can use that as the sensitivity knob. After that I am using the tube comp to boost the signal back up. The filter sounds great this way, but it is not very efficient.

I have found that if I put my English Muff'n as a clean tube preamp between my parallel looper and amp (the M13 is in the looper) all the distortions and fuzzes sound much better (read: good). It is big and awkward and frustrating as hell to power and place, but well worth it once I start playing.

Right now my rig is bass> parallel loop> Muff'n> amp. Loop 1> M13 in> M13 send> Loop return 1. Loop 2> M13 return> M13 out> Loop return 2. As of now the only thing I've wanted to try to get and failed is a good organ sound. I've never been able to get into compression until it hits the mixing stage so me not liking or disliking them that much is not surprising. I've stumbled onto a bunch of stuff I didn't know I wanted and a handful of other things that I said "Huh?" to. I may start to pick up some individual effects again but I don't suspect that they will fall into one of the traditional categories of effects as this has all of that covered for me.
