Dick's Pick's 14 is an excellent recording of the Grateful Dead at their 1973 jammiest. Just Billy on drums (as was the case 72-74) and that week, Donna was at home with a newborn baby, sparing you many minutes of wincing!

haha... donna. the schreek in Playing in the band, you know what i am talking about, always makes me cringe.

The live CDs that the Allman Brothers release each year prove they are also still at the top of their game forty years on. The way they use their catalog like a book of standards as a springboard for great jams and impro, is excellent! Bringing in Haynes, Trucks, Burbridge and Quinones saved that band from being a stale oldies show the does the sheds tour every summer for the*cash-flow. *[not there is anything wrong with it].

The most recent one I bought was the 3/20/09 Beacon show, Oteil just kills on it.

I hear what you mean so to speak about Donna Jean as a Yoko, and it isn't a fair connection. Donna nor Keith did anything divisive within the band, and contributed a lot in their time. I think Donna could sing at least as well as any of the boys, and Keith was the best keyboard player they ever had. And Donna has been on good terms with the Dead family in the years after her time.

I agree with the shreek in Playin in the Band not being her finest moment, but no worse than Bob's excited falsetto got sometimes at the end of Sugar Mag, Estimated, or Saint of Circumstance.

Listen for Henderson's clam...he stays in "E" while McLaughlin takes it up to "Bb".

I'm not familiar with the tune, or with that moment in the tune (although I have the CD...guess I should listen to it once in a while, LOL!) but from your description above that doesn't sound like a Henderson clam, that sounds like a very common McLaughlin harmonic substitution!

Man, I recently picked up 3 of their 2009 Live @The Beacon sets...with some cool guests sitting in. They're still bad!
