Well, it's been a busy couple of months (lots of work), so there have been some acquisitions!

I'm not sure if any of these will actually be attached to my board, however. I'm pretty happy with my current setup:

However, I'll likely be using the Visual Volume after my board (sitting on the stage/floor) and the Small Stone will see occasional use in the 'auxiliary' loop of my board. I need to use a tiny bit of boost from an LPB-1 to get the Small Stone at the level I need, but both pedals are tiny- so I'm living with the arrangement!

Watch for future reviews of the Empress ParaEq & DHA Custom DI-Eq. Both are great units! The Empress is more for studio use for final tone sculpting before my pre & the DHA DI will now be my primary live DI. (good riddance BDDI!!!) I like to keep the DI on top of my amp, so it won't get mounted on the board either.

Well, for me, the price was worth it. I'm using it as the "eq" portion of my pieced-together studio/session pre. (I've never been happy with an off-the-shelf, all-in-one preamp w/eq, so I've assembled my own portable 'channel strip')

I use it as a final tone shaper (maybe boost some lows, or filter out some pick attack, or duck the presence, for example...) before going into a GT Brick. It's turned out to be pretty much perfect for sculpting what I need! Plus, there's more than enough gain with the boost knob to compensate for radical eq'ing.

I have a feeling that for the vast majority of players, the ParaEq is probably overkill. You can certainly find cheaper eq's or some sort of 'bundled eq' solution in another device. But, for me, I was looking for a super-high quality unitasker. The noise floor of the Empress is totally studio-approved and the flexibility of the design is great (if you know what you're doing with a parametric!). Even at 9 volts (there's dip switches for up to 24volts), there's plenty of headroom- even with an active 5 string with overdrive! I haven't come across a similar, compact parametric that sounded as clean & quiet as the Empress.

I think I'll be getting a lot of use out of it in my acoustic guitar signal chain as well. It just sounds so much better & is far more flexible than my onboard pre.

i might swap the EQ for an EHX Mole because all i ever use the EQ for is a bass boost.
eventually i want to get a Supercollider and Groove regulator to replace the Muff and Q-tron respectively

i am borrowing the whammy, and i am loving it! i may get one for myself if i can get a few more hours where i work. i have also seen the benefits of the bass whammy, i could see where i would use the 5th up to Oct. up setting.


why oh why did digitech ever discontinue the bass whammy?!:crying:

My recent weekend project : DIY Pedaltrain inspired 2 tier board. Made of 2" aluminium angled bar with some bolts. The 2nd tier can be opened up with some hinges, so I can put power supplies beneath.

It's not completely finished yet, I still need to buy some velcros. Then I plan to have built-in in & out jack, XLR and power socket.

And...I realized that I need more pedals....:bawl:

PS: before anybody ask : the last 2 pedal on the front row are BF2B and homemade Ross Phaser clone, the blank box will house custom Big Muff, Jacques Prisoner Delay from France next to the Microbass (need to replace it with Memory Toy as the headroom doesn't cut it for hi output bass). And you know the rest.

Very nice work there. Sleek and elegant!

I picked up a new RV-3 yesterday (after selling mine a few months ago) and I'm auditioning it to replace my separate reverb and delay so that I can open up space for an incoming 4ms Phaseur fleur

I was using my Carl Martin Parametric Pre/DI in much the same way... minus the GT Brick since it has an inclusive and very clean DI, tho lately I've taken to using mine before my dirt channels to drive certain frequencies a li'l harder. That Empress looks interesting tho... see, mine has a fixed Q and you choose the freq. center and the level of boost/cut, but it looks like on yours you have the option to expand/tighten the Q as well. I bet that's useful as all heck when cutting to eradicate anything unwanted like the pick attack you mentioned. I could see that being extremely useful for putting a nice 100 & 500 Hz push into some muff style fuzzes and still retaining most of the scooped sound when using the tighter Q setting.

Right on. Actually, the Empress website has some video clips using the ParaEq just like you detail- as a filter to manipulate fuzz (albeit, with guitar).

It's really nice, in a studio setting, to be able to fix small tonal issues (or enhance tones) quickly & on the fly without having to involve the engineer. I find that I "get away with" a lot of more creative ideas & sounds by being able to dial in appropriate tones quickly. In the business I work in (primarily 'commercial release' music), I have to be able to work fast. I can count on the Empress to help me zero in on a tone before the engineer starts to grumble or producer says "...let's just use the last tone..."!
