Post yourself playing bass in Quarantine!

To all my brothers and sisters of the bass playing community, are we still playing bass or what during these terrible times?

If you are...post yourself at home!
Let’s have some fun!

I’ll start first!

Happy Easter and stay safe!

Just put a video up, check the posts: After Forever: Black Sabbath Tribute

I gave the band page and your video a like. Couple thoughts...

-Rockin it :bassist: Making those lines look effortless.

-Geezer was one of the first bass players to make me realize just what an interesting and powerful instrument it could be, as it sure was in his hands!

-So different making the music with a live band than it is playing along with a recording, as you noted at the end of... damn, my memory sux :wacky:

-Is it necessary to flip the camera for FB Live stuff these days? Can't viewers just release the vertical lock on their camera to watch it horizontally??

-Instead of saying "Thanks for coming out" you ought have been saying "Thanks for staying in!"

All in all a really cool live video!

Are all 4 band members doing their own isolation concerts along with the recordings or just you??

I just uploaded this phone recording a minute ago (Trying to keep mostly quiet for my housemates sleeping above.) You can hear my cat giving a meow of (dis)approval(?) at the very end >^.. ^<

Spector Bass > Aguilar TLC Comp > light Chorus > Keeley Caverns > Genz Benz Shuttle6.2 w/GB 212. Also running a clean parallel signal that just goes thru the TLC comp

catcauphonic - Thank you for the feedback! And I liked your "spacey" delay style of playing. Very different from what I do! The cat meow at the end was perfectly timed.

-Geezer was one of the first bass players to make me realize just what an interesting and powerful instrument it could be, as it sure was in his hands! - Geezer plays much harder than I do - It's amazing his bass still puts out the notes! That guy is a monster.

-So different making the music with a live band than it is playing along with a recording, as you noted at the end of... damn, my memory sux :wacky: Hand of Doom - it's nice when the band times out the song to me when we play it. Geezer varied the bass line ever so slightly verse to verse. Just slightly different timing things that Bill Ward and Tony Iommi picked up on quickly. Of course the album version sounds excellent, but playing a long with it, you can tell they did not play to a metronome.

-Is it necessary to flip the camera for FB Live stuff these days? Can't viewers just release the vertical lock on their camera to watch it horizontally?? There is something about the angle of the camera and Facebook. No matter if it looks right on the screen, if it is slanted the wrong way, it stays like that. I think it comes down to the video format created on the phone. It's 2020, you think FB would have figured out how to adjust that on the fly.

-Instead of saying "Thanks for coming out" you ought have been saying "Thanks for staying in!" I noticed that both times! I could not fix it on the fly to same my life. Gigging for years and I have never done anything like this before - I have been saying the same phrases for years.

All in all a really cool live video! Thank you!

Are all 4 band members doing their own isolation concerts along with the recordings or just you?? I am not sure yet. I know my drummer, Tom, was tuning in live and loved it. The bass perspective of music is different and not many people do videos like this with bass. It's usually a guitar player and/or singer. I always thought bass was underappreciated and these videos are to prove otherwise. I am going to do another one. It will be shorter and more bass, less playing with Sabbath tracks.

Yeaaa :hyper: Hand Of Doom is one of my all time faves... certainly in the top10.

When you get around to the next one hopefully you'll post or link it here :bassist:

The video I posted is not normally what I do with the band(s), just messing around in isolation. I'm never really bored with a bunch of fun pedals in front of me :headphone:

I've done a couple. The first was a Mariah Carey tune (covering the Jackson 5) from her Unplugged show years and years ago with Randy Jackson on bass. The second was a collab my brother and I did. All he had to record drums was his iPhone (no apps or interfaces, just the phone video/mic).

No videos, but I'm recording a lot of covers.

After decades away from bass, about two years ago I got serious about giving it an honest effort. About a year ago I started taking weekly lessons. Every week we pick a song, I learn the bass part and he learns the guitar part, and the next week we play to a backing track. It is a great way to help develop my reading skills in addition to adding material to my experience bank. Sometimes I have only a day or two to learn the song, and the acoustics in his room are terrible, so the results are often ... muddy. Even before the virus hit, I had started re-recording the songs via D.I. (or by close mic'ing my Markbass 121P), but isolation has increased the rate I'm covering them.

Lesson Cover Songs

The "clean" column has the re-recordings. "Clean" doesn't mean free of errors; it just means a better recording. All are single takes and represent my skills as they are today. Maybe in a year I'll do them all again to hear if there has been any progress.

The cleanest:
  • Talking Heads "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]"
  • Elvis Costello's "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]"
  • Elvis Costello's "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]"
  • Neil Young's "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]"
Most fun to play:
  • Allman Brothers "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]"
  • REM's "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]"
I recently bought a Mouse 30 fretless, and while it isn't too clean (it was take 2 of 2), I'm proud of the intonation on "[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]" considering I had the bass just a couple hours at that point.

Gear:
If anyone wants to offer constructive criticism of my playing, especially broad brush impressions of where I'm falling short (eg, "you have a tendency to play ahead of the beat" (yes I do)), please tell me. There is a lot of room for improvement, and my feelings won't get hurt. :-)
