Ok, so how damaging is an aftermarket pickguard to the value of the bass? Isn't that rather common?
I am pessimistic at the best of times. Anytime I see a bass for sale at way below fair market value I get skeptical.....
I paid $700 for my Roscoe Beck V, but I wouldn't sell it for less than $1,000. If someone offered me something less than that, I'd just say, "No thanks." No muss, no fuss. BTW, if you offered me $1,000 for it right now, I'd still say the same thing. Capitalism is great.
Yes, some may behave like little bi*ches and do what you say above... I guess they are the ones who will not buy the bass.
If someone is able to buy cheap, that's irrelevant when it comes to the actual value of the bass. Best example being that famous '62 pink Jazz.

If your not that knowledgable, do one of two things. Get that knowledgable real quick, or get pics and give TB a day & a half and you'll know if your getting a killer deal or just some old shell of a bass with a bunch of mismatched parts.
Here the thing though.
If your buying it as a player mismatched parts may not be so horrible. But if your strictly buying to sell it. Mismatched parts are going to kill you especially if it's just all over the place with what has been changed.
You have a few guys right here in this thread that are pretty knowledgeable with these things so if you can get detailed pics I'd highly suggest doing so.
Also, I don't think a pick guard is going to completely kill you here effect it? absolutely.
But, when you go to sell be prepared to offer a butt load of pics, and answer a ton of questions.
And face a ton of scrutiny. Don't get frustrated with it have patience and ride it out. You'll learn more from the doubters than you ever will from the guys that just believe anything you tell em.

I once found a Blueberry Bass Overdrive for $50. This was when they were very popular in the effects forum, selling for $275-300. I traded it for a Demeter Compulator, which at the time was selling for about $180-200. So, I still turned a great profit, but also passed on a nice discount to a fellow TB'er.

Don't know about other parts of the world, but I've been buying, selling and trading all sorts of stuff since I was about 14, and two things can be taken for granted I've learned.
#1. If a deal sounds too good to be true, 99% of the time it is.
#2. If the buyers find out what You paid for the generally available item, the price will go down.
It all also boils down to what a "sizeable profit" for someone is. Obviously.
A bit of change for a few days work probably isn't it for anyone, but neither is the eqvivalent of a one days pay for two days of work. Not to me anyway.

Well I decided to opt out of buying the bass. A bird in hand is better than two in the bush as they say.
Of course now you will be flooded with requests from people who want the deal......

Oh that one stings! Right in the heart. But seriously though, I don't have the time or money to go around investing into shaky flipping projects, especially in the current market. If basses were selling like they were a few years ago, this would've been a no-brainer.

The seller wasn't very communicable or often available. Also, he is moving to Australia this week. The pictures in the ad look good... from a distance. I tried to ask for proof of the year, originality and over the phone he assured me, but he offered me no proof. Seeing as he's moving to Australia, I don't think he's available. If you want to call and pester him, go ahead, but don't tell him I sent you!

Yeah I don't plan on contacting him, but someone may be interested in it. I just figured if someone is fairly local and wants a nice bass at a nice price it was a good opportunity.
