Potentiometer problem??

Hello guys.
In my Bass Collection SB320 Nanyo Series, when I try to change the volume of it, rolling the knob, it makes a noise; and in certain 'positions' that just mutes the sound. I have people saying me that is just humidity/moisture in the potentiometer, and others saying me that is the potentiometer 'dead'.

Other thing, I bought it used (it had already almost 20 years) and in the electronic panel, it have cork in every potentiometer????!!!! Someone can say me, 'why the hell' it that doing there?

Cheers
