Pots jazz bass. Bridge full open cuts neck pu

I don't know if this answer was already given but here's my 1 cent. I agree with the phasing problem. I had this same problem when I was changing the pick-ups of my stratocaster. The only way ( from my experience ) that I solved it was to change 1 of the pickups to RWRP ( reverse wound reverse polarity ) and/or change the positive of one pup and place it to ground. As for the strat I upgraded the middle pick-up to a RWRP and the problem was solved. The peavey foundation bass that I have originally had one of the pick-ups RWRP thus did not have a problem. When I upgraded the electronics and pick-ups of the peavey , I had the same problem using the blend control. I resolved the problem using the mod from this link. I hope this helps.

Yeah sorry im a newby...

What i find strange is that they blend perfectly up to 80% turn of the pots... But when i turn one all the way up... The sound turns to awfull.

So every jazzbass has the same?

And yes. That’s correct. On a JB the maximum output is obtained when both pickups are set at approximately 80%. There can be some variance because pots usually have a 10% tolerance, so anywhere around 80-85% full on is perfectly normal depending on the bass. The output level starts to decrease after that. And if they’re not balanced above that you get the phase issue others already mentioned. It’s a “JB thing.”

This sounds like you know what you are talking about.

I bought the bass second hand so it is very possible that the pu's are not matched. I will unsolder the pu's and measure the resistance. If they are the same i will swap the wires.

Its really worth the try before buying a new set of pu's

Ok, but the bridge pickup may actually measure higher resistance than neck pickup... often, but not always, here pickup is higher output to make it sound equal output to kick l neck pickup, because strings vibrate less near bridge making pickup generate less output.

Just post resistance of each please, and maybe it'll even have pickup model numbers stamped under which would be more definitive.

I called the last owner and he told me that he had placed another bridge pu because the original was broken.

I swapped the white and the black wires from that pu and the problem is gone!

So i didnt bother to mausure the resistance of the individual pu.

Well... no. Volume pots still are loudest at 100%. But yea it seems to work like you're describing.... anyhow, problem is solved.

By the way.. it's not just jazz basses... it's 2 pickup basses with 2 volume controls.

Arguably it's 2 pickup guitars also.

What a great thread.

Didn't cost him a cent to fix, either.

Measured by themselves pots pass more current. Within a tuned AC circuit, where you get involved with things like impedance, there are interactions and other factors at play that affect overall output as well as perceived volume due to the way our ears perceive frequency.

Suffice to say you can’t take components in a circuit like that in isolation. Much like the often stated resistance measurement of a pickup tells you virtually nothing about how that pickup sounds in any meaningful way. Which is probably why many pickup manufacturers so freely provide it. When you’re effectively saying nothing there’s no trade secrets being given away. ;)

yea, I suggested that too, when I said something along the lines of "it seems that way", to your suggestion. In other words, I was pointing out how there are interactions and other factors at play that affect perceived volume.... because of the mid range scoop and other cancelled frequencies from both pickups being on full.

In other words, we agree, but I personally would never summarize it as something similar to "put both volumes at 80% to get full output", or I think something similar that you said. Like I replied, it can see like that... but that isn't actually what is happening.. the output is actually higher with both pickups on, but the mids are reduced, and the perceived volume can be less.

So yea, exactly, what we both said :-)

that makes sense, glad you figured it out!

in the future, if you need to be sure a pickup works or not, just tap the polepieces lightly with a screwdriver: if it works you'll hear the taps through the speaker... If you had done this you would have found that both pickups worked, and that would point out straight away to a phase issue :)
