power amp question

yet another chapter in my new set-up adventure.

So I'm running a Ampeg SVPCL with a GK800RB as the power amp.

I'm considering selling the 800RB and buying a power amp. let's say I can get $400 for the 800RB.

What are some good power amps in the $400 price range?

Would you make the trade?

I imagine i will get more watts in most power amps then the 800RB. Will it make the rig sound "better"?

The only think I like about having the 800RB there is if i have problems with the ampeg i have a backup righ there...

thoughts?

A QSC works great with that amp. I am sure a Crown or Stewart would work as well.

IMO yes!
For $400 you might find a decent used power amp. Plus, as most pwr-amps are stereo, you could drive two cabs with it, or bridge and pump a lot of power into one. Gives you more options IMO. Good luck.

I've used QSC power amps for years, the PLX models. They weigh 21 lbs. and you can get up to 3000 watts bridged with them. Even lighter are the older Power Lite series, which weigh 17 lbs. There are always some on Ebay.

The fact is, a dedicated power amp is just that, it is dedicated to do that job.
The power input in your GK is an extra feature from your amplifier head.

The two questions you should ask yourself:

• can you live with the GK?
• do you *need* to spend the money for the power amp?

The CL is built like a tank and good power amps are more reliable than what you drive to the gig.

Very true.


I think you will greatly prefer the pre/power setup. You will likely notice quicker response, and more detailed low end (assuming you get a decent power amp), and enjoy greater headroom.

alright. so i'll sell the 800RB....for say...$350 i coulb afford a 600 wattish power amp eh? that will do the job i assume?
