Power amp questions

I have an SVT-2 Pro and a basson 810. Little did I know that you needed 1500 watts to power the 810 properly. So I got in contact with someone at Basson and he said that I would need a power amp to power it with my head properly.

Can anyone give me more information on this.
I dont even know how to connect a power amp into my rig.

Um im only 15 but isnt the 2 a 300 watt tube amp. So its roughly equal to 900 solid state watts whick is plenty to drive any 8x10. Isnt the 1500 just its maximum capacity to handle. I think you should be fine.

Oh No here we go with the tube watts garbage again!!!! A 300W amp is 300W period whether derived using solid state devices or vacuum tubes.

Not if he turns it up to 11!

I'd go with a decent pre (dozens to consider) and a QSC power amp (not sure what model...check the specs. Best bang for the buck). Even if you decide to ditch the 810, its always nice to have the extra power available for a single or double cab configuration. Watts is cheap!

So you can't run that cab at a lower volume? You always have to blast it with 1500 watts?

Have you actually tried using the cabinet, and your ears?

From Basson's web site comes this gem: "This is the most brutal cab in our line of bass cabinets so the amp choice is critical & must run at 1,500 watts per channel at 4 Ohms minimum."

Per channel? Since most bass amps are a single channel, do they really know what they're talking about?

Perhaps the cabs are horribly inefficient.

Good question! Maybe we should ask "why the 810, the biggest mambo enclosure they offer?" I would assume (maybe falsely) that the OP is playing larger venues or has only limited PA support. If other of those is the case, yes, I would recommend an appropriate power amp as 300 watts may be inadequate.

I must respectfully disagree with you on this point again. All Watts are not created equal. If we were only driving resistors I agree but as soon as you start driving speakers the whole game changes. Speakers are not nice 8 or 4 Ohm loads like a resistor (which all amplifiers are rated into). If the amplifier has a soft supply, like most tube amps and one solid state amp does, it will be much louder into a speaker than an amplifier with a hard supply. Soft supplies make solid state amplifiers more expensive because they require output transistors with much higher voltage capability so you don’t see them built this way very often.

ok. When they say the speakers need a certain amount of power, it's because of the uniqueness of Basson cabs.

Their 10 inch speaker's magnets weigh 200 oz. each. that's about 13lbs per magnet. A magnet that heavy needs more power than a normal speaker to fire the speaker. They need about 250 watts each, so when they list their power ratings (not the rms) thats how much power you should be putting through them to get the best sound.

Also, yeah, he's definetly 15. tube watts = SS watts. Always.

Basson cabs usually have to be run by power amps. thats why they list it by channels.

maybe another basson guy can roll in here?

Better idea ... dump the Basson and get a cab that is more suited to your SVT II Pro. You will have a hard time finding an amp that delviers the kind of power you're talking about and also sounds worth a crap in comparison to the SVT - that's a nice amp you've got there... maximize it with the right cab.

If you're will to lug those monsters around - snag an old SEALED SVT bin - you will be able to make a whole lotta noise and you will be happy with it ...

I haven't done this but one of the folks whose tone I admire run's his SVT (old style, non-pro, prolly from the 70's) into SWR Gloiath 4x10s. He plays a P-Bass (Lakland actually) and up close - his rig sounds friggin' great. I'm guessing that the SWR cab is a rental...

A Berg NV 610 would be awsome as well... maybe the one with a 15 and 3 10's. Ping PRSBass and ask him about that one...

+1. The amp and cab combo isnt really a good one. the SVT 2 is a very good amp. the Basson 810 is a very good cab. but the two together dont work
