Power strip switch on the wrong end?

Still, I don't see how adding a few inches of wire to a power strip would raise the manufacturing cost.

Say to include the extra wire costs ten cents in materials and labor. Say they make a million of them a year. That's $100,000. If it doesn't make a hundred grand in increased profits for them to move the switch, why should they?

Add to that the fact that the housings are probably machine made; how much would it cost them to retool the machines to make them differently? How many people care which end the switch is on?

It's the same with the cameras. Apparently not enough people are as irritated as I am with the lack of a viewfinder for it to be worth it for the manufacturers to build them in any more. It is what it is.

My opinion, just cuz I've done this with a few racks.

Cheap rack mounted power strip (not a 'conditioner', just a rack mount version of a power strip - usually has a on/off switch and a circuit breaker).

Mount on the upper part in the back of the rack - easy access to just reach over the rack to get to the switch, and doesn't 'eat up another rack space'.
 
Crazy, I just looked down and the one I'm using for my computer is that way.

I think it's because there are two plugs that aren't on the switch, and they're in columns, so all the switchable plugs are after the switch anyway.

That's very neat. I suppose I could just have the switch in the back of the rack too.

I did something similar to what George did. The racks used by network equipment are of the same size as the racks/rack cases that we use. I was able to get a power strip from our IT department that was mounted on a plate that fits two spaces on a rack (I think you could buy blank rack plates from stores that sell musical instrument racks and the like). I just screwed that to the back end of my rack case. With nothing connected, the power strip clears the covers. Since I'm lazy to pull the plugs out everytime I latch on the cover, I mounted the power strip/rack plate with the sockets facing inside the rack case. This works if you have at least one component that is of shallow depth. Come pack-up time, I just tuck-in the power strip's power cord in the space inside the rack.

I just bought one as I'm reorganizing my rack and didn't want to reach over wires to click the power. I originally bought a Furman rack unit which was perfect ... except for the weight. 6 pounds! Great unit for the price, but I sent it back ... my back's not what it used to be, sometimes getting old sucks!

Here's the Furman unit, great if weight is no concern:

The Tripp Lite above is another option, but only 6 outlets and no wall wart spacing.

Just posting here in case someone else stumbles on this thread as I did.
