The sound should never sound "weak" in a power trio. Even when the gtr is in solo mode.
To answer your question directly - What I do is play normally. My always-on effects are a compressor and preamp. I do use foot pedals for keys in some situations, but I don't rely on it for sound reinforcement, just added spice for certain songs. I also use an 8 string bass on some things, so that takes up a little extra space. I only use other effects on my own solos, never during a guitarist solo.
If you think it needs a rhythm gtr or key sound to back you up, then maybe you're not used to what a power trio sounds like?
If so, you wouldn't be alone. However, my recommendation would be to listen to some well known power trios and see what they sound like. Get used to the sound. See where the Bass volume is in relation to the guitar. It's usually a little farther up than in 4 or 5 pieces.
Ok, maybe volume isn't an effect as we mean it in this forum. Lots of effects here can make the low end more _interesting_ while the solo is happening, such as chorus, flanger, even simple stuff like overdrive through fuzz. But if your tone has the right sonic spectrum to begin with, adding an effect during the solo isn't actually better, and can be distracting from the solo itself. Done right, it can be cool, but I like some space between the voices.
So I would ask, why do you think it sounds weak? Do you like the power trio format? I know guys who don't. Do you prefer 4 or 5 or more pieces? That may be why you think a trio sounds weak. For myself, I prefer trios, but obviously there are a lot of different ways to put together a band.
