Powered Micro Cabinet?

Anyone make a powered (~50W or more) extension cabinet with something small like an 8" or 10" speaker? I live in south Korea and transport of gear in the concrete hell-hole is a bear. I already have a tiny mixer and a K&K preamp to control it.

Seems like my other less-good option is to buy a powered PA speaker.

Cheers

T-bird,

You ask a good, reasonable question, why not a combo? I live in South Korea. When bands play at a bar all the gear is already there, usually nice stuff too (Sonar, marshall, Laney etc.). This is because we would have NO live music without it due to the total bitch that driving/parking is here. However, my band is trying to break into places that are not already set up. I will be transporting my gear (EUB, acoustic bass, and 6 string guitar) via a small 2 wheeled cart on the subway. In addition. I need something at home for my EUB. I've seen/heard those Marshall 1x8 15 watt amps. Super-suckie!

Spending more money, wasting space, and spending excess money on a preamp and controllers in just not in the cards for me.

Buuuuut, after all that, I realized that there is a chance something I find in the US won't be in 220V. DOH!

Hi.

There's plenty of small powered "personal monitors", one cheaper example:

I'm also curious though, why not a combo?

Even a relatively large SWR WM10 will probably be smaller than all the equipment You're planning to use.

Hi.

Thanks for the explanation. Makes more sense now.

What You said about the voltage, you're absolutely correct. IMLE 95% of US appliances of any significant power won't work outside US voltage grid. Unless SMPS of course.

Just a thought, is DIY totally out of the question?

Granted, it won't be cheaper than the cheapest low end cheapo, but a 10" neo speaker (Eminence Deltalite II would be my choice) in a simple enclosure paired with a small class D amplifier module would do the trick nicely. An added shelve or compartment for the pre and the mini-mixer, and You have yoursef a compact modular combo.

Here's a link to the Deltalite II page, there's quite a few cabinet design suggestions as well. They're about the smallest size that a 10" works in.

http://www.eminence-speaker.com/pro...=DELTALITEII2510&speaker_size=10&SUB_CAT_ID=3

Class D modules and power supplies should be readily available in South Korea AFAIK, just pick one suitable.

Unfortunately good 8" MI suitable bass speakers are either extremely expensive or aren't even in the manufacturers production lines. That would make the cab even smaller.

I think that the OP would be reasonably well served by a small 10" or 12" bass combo amp. What combo amps don't tend to have is multiple channels, but the OP has a mixer already.

However, another issue to consider is whether two basses are musically necessary given the hassle of transporting them. I know this is a choice that every bassist has to make on their own. Personally, I am reluctant to bring two basses to any gig, even here in a locale where transportation is easy.

I'm happy with my GK MB150 combo. It's compact, rugged, and fairly loud for its size. There are plenty of other options out there as well.

Why not get a smallish powered PA cab? Most will take the output of your preamp of choice (check the specs of both before buying). If you don't want a lot of volume or don't crank the bass EQ these can be good solutions. Cheers!

Well, I'm drunk and frustrated about my situation. I went to the central music Gallery to see what could be had to push some sound. wulp, the cheapest (good) bass combo I found was a SWR 1x10 @ 35 watts for $450. I also found Mark bass micro amps for $850 adn minin Marks for $1500. Other things I found like Hartke and GK were all 2-3x the price.

As the last poster indicated, a monitor might work. Well, there were JBL's avaiable for $500 each and a bunch of no name craptacular junk.

At this point I think I might take the suggestion adn try to import a speaker along with finding a Class D amp locally adn having some old ajjoshi make me a cabinet. PITA.

Oh, and I found out I got suckered on E-bay for my EUB. looking Seoul but feeling Incheon.

I use a JBL EON 15 often. They make an EON 10-- but definitely stay with the G2 series (the original grey series is underpowered).

Also, the Line 6, 10" version is great. It's small, light, 160watts and has an XLR out.

There are some interesting options available from FBT and Gemini, and RCF if you want to spend some $$$. I haven't tried any of them, but FBT makes a 10" subwoofer that would certainly get you down low and it makes mains that range from 5-15" woofers. All are powered. Good luck.

Thanks for all of your responses. After a lot of drinking/net surfing I finally came to the realization that you can pick three (super small, light, loud, affordable). This only applies to the market everywhere but Korea. Mark Bass stuff was all marked up >50% over list. Import duties on these items is only 20%. Same kind of crap happens with high performace bicycles and golf stuff. quality stuff = shafting.

On my knees and clutching my credit card I bought a GenzBenz 3.0 8". It works on 220 or 120, weighs only a bit more than a good dump and is a little louder. Once the credit card was rolling I bought an Ergo bass EUB from Jesse. This will replace something I bought on Ebay that maybe should not have been sold. My Korean neighbors are really gonna like the clear tone and bass response of the new rig. They will amazed at the volume this combo will achieve.

Hi.

Well, drinking always tend to ease the desicion making process now doesn't it ;).

While I have no pesonal experience with GB products, if they're even half as good as the couple of TB GB staff members, You're golden.

Congrats for the new amp and the EUB, I hope that Your neighbours will appreciate your effort to fill their lives with bass tunes :D.

have a look at the little 50 watts combo from markbass. Someting like 2 kgs only

Yeah, it's small, maybe a bit too small for EUB. That unit went for $1000 here in Korea. The bigger 2 speaker unit was $1600.
It's also limited in that it can't power another, larger speaker. The biggest issue for that little tyke is that it's not autoswitch from 120v to 220V. I live in Korea, may move elsewhere, and will certainly take it back to the USA if we ever return. The GB unit looks out for itself.

I better lay off the Soju or we'll be broke. Loud, but broke. Thanks for your previous responses.

Skol!
