Powered subs-QSC vs EV

Have you checked RCF ?

If you are looking for a small footprint , light , good sounding sub , check out the RCF ART902as.
The 905 digs deeper but is bigger/heavier. (of course)

Compare it to other sub of its size and it's gonna come on top.


I use it for bass monitoring with an L'Acoustic 108p top in my rock band and also as a PA when I play in trio with with two tops.

I'm sure they're nice but not in the same price range. I could get 3 EV's or 2 Ksubs for that price. So hopefully they are a lot better.

You mentioned smallish sub , that's why I suggested that.
(didn't get the $$$$)

I paid 1700$ wich is not that much for that type of quality.
When I was in my quest to find a sub for bass monitoring purpose my main concern were ; sound, small footprint and light weight. Money was (almost) no object.

Small and good sound is good but I've have 3 kids with crooked teeth. Money is always an object.:D

I was looking at this for EV's: Invalid Link Removed

$2k for 2 subs and 2 tops, cables/poles. I think this has come down a few hundred since I started this thread.

$2450 for ksub and 2 k10's + cables/stands

The drummer said he paid about this local for the 12s and 18.

I just got a pair of 1x18 powered ev subs from chuck levins music in maryland-
they carry factory b stock (refurbished, as new with full warranty) very cheap- around 500.00 a sub.
Very musical, lots of notes, but the internal crossover could use a steeper slope (like most built in crossovers).
The built in limiter doesn't sound great when pushed hard, but if you work within their ability (like any other speaker) they're fantastic for the money.

It's been eating at me for a year now so I finally sucked it up and ordered a zxa1 sub. Impressed so far trying it out at home. Going to gig it a couple of times over the next week in smaller rooms and see how it does.

The drummer got the kw181 and k12's. I picked up two k10's. The 18 is overkill for many gigs. I want something easy to transport and set up for smaller rooms. Most of my gigs are not that loud. A k10 on top of the ev with a zoom b3 makes a nice sounding bass rig. I might get another ev. I've got a small room pop gig Friday and a big room wallpaper gig Tuesday for trials.

Well I don't expect a guy that gigs a 412 to understand :p

Seriously, I don't like loud. A typical gig is a bunch of people standing and sitting around drinking wine. We play at a level where they can converse. After a while they'll get drunk enough to dance. Then we go up a little. We play pop, rock, funk, country, oldies and disco at dinner jazz levels.

Same here. Not like small arena gigs. Pool party type stuff. If we play outside for a lot of people somebody else is providing sound.

The 412 I got for $350 bucks! Couldn't pass it up! Believe it or not they are ALWAYS telling me to turn up. I hate blowing away the crowd. You turn an enjoyable song into a physically painful experience... the opposite of what a band is hired for!

Looks like I have a pair of Yamaha CW118s used coming my way for $450... another can't pass up deal! I'll be interested to test the system outdoors 1 vs 2 & see what we "NEED" :smug:

I had some club 15's that were good sounding speakers. They were actually what put me down to road to putting together a light PA. Those things were kind of heavy. Long story, I'll spare you the details.

First gig with the EV sub. This is the entire PA and my bass rig except the mic bag, a rolling crate with assorted extension cords and outlet strips and the drummers 2 k12s.

The two k10s are behind the sub. The backpack has cables and zoom b3. The laptop bag has mackie dl1608. The two other bags are stands and lights, and of course my bass in the gig bag on top.

Time from arrival to end of sound check was slightly less than one hour.

FOH was the sub with one k10 on top. One k10 on the floor for the front row and one k12 for the drummer and keys. The bass and drums went to an aux out to the sub and the main mix went to top k10. Each monitor had it's own aux mix.

We initially had the K monitors in deep mode because everyone was afraid they wouldn't have enough low end. It was too boomy. We went to norm and it made everybody happy except the drummer, who wanted more kick. He ended up sending the other channel of the drum brain to the other k12 and sat it behind him. With a little work on the eq I think I could have gotten more kick in his monitor.

I can only say the set up was extremely successful. Several people that come to see us at this place regularly said it was the best sound we've ever had. I'm very impressed with the zxa1 sub and the k's. I will definitely get another sub and it makes me want to give the zxa1 tops a try. I've been skeptical that the little 8's could do FOH for a full band but I think two on top of two subs might do it. That would make the whole FOH system about 100lbs.

Next up, bigger, boomy room for a United Way fundraiser. Supposed to be background music and they hope people will dance but my experience with weeknight gatherings is they will come in, talk a bit and hit the road ASAP.

cool gig & report. I'll be doing some outdoor DJing soon so I'll be rolling with 2 18s & 15" mains. WAY overkill for that venue... we use JBL PRX112s & one Mackie SRS1500 sub for something like that. Last night thats all we needed & sounded great

I haven't heard the ksub but the drummer does have the kw181. Good sub but it's about the right tool for the job. It's good to have a sledge hammer when you need it but it won't be very useful on a roofing job.

The EV is sooooo easy to move. It's the same weight as the berg CN212 that I had but because it's shorter it's very easy to pick up and handle. If a 12 bass cab can produce a low E there's no reason a 12 sub can't. Especially when it doesn't have to produce anything above 100hz.

To keep the room from booming I was dialing out lows on the bass. I'll try to post a screenshot of the bass EQ from the mackie later.
