Powering my board (Rusty Box content)

I'm putting together a slightly expanded board from what I had previously. In my old band, I had a few pedals but really only ended up needing my light OD and tuner. My current band is a bit more noise, so looking for a few more textures. My board will be set up as follows:

Pitchblack Tuner -> Rusty Box -> DOD Gunslinger -> Tall Font Russian -> MXR Micro Flanger -> Polara Reverb

I have a OneSpot wall wart, which is fine except for the rusty box. I had planned to set up the 9V pedals on the 1Spot daisy chain, and use the standard power supply for the Rusty Box all tied up under the board and using a long extension cord to plug it in the wall. It'll work, but not very elegant.

I might be interested in pickup up a power supply to use if it proves to be a more elegant power solution for a moderate price. For starters, it seems the best bet is to use the Voodoo Labs Voltage Doubling cable to run the pedal at 24v

Voodoo Lab Voltage Doubling Cable - 18" Str 18/24v

From there, the question is what is the best power brick. The ones I was looking at were:

1Spot CS6 - with 6 outputs, 2 which go up to 12V and 2 that do 18V, this is a nice option. With 6 pedals, I'd need to use the doubling cable and two spots for the Rusty Box, but then could daisy chain two effects to use only one slot. The price is right.

MXR Iso-Brick - Lots of outputs, and I think I saw someone used this to run a Rusty Box, so that's good to know. However, the higher voltage plugs are not next to each other, meaning the doubling cable would have a hard time reaching

Voodoo Labs PP2+ - This has to be in the discussion. 8 outputs, there is a couple help threads on the Voodoo labs site about powering the RB specifically. Also I believe that if I did not want to use the doubler, I could plug the wall wart directly into the output plug on the back of the unit. This is the biggest unit though.

Interested in good/not so good experiences with these bricks. Anyone with experience of putting an RB on a power block, please feel free. Thanks.

I have a Pedaltrain w/ a PP2+ mounted underneath and fully take advantage of the plug for the wall wart to power my Rusty Box. I use one of those grey plug adapters to get the wart to actually reach the plug:

Also, slightly off topic but any reason why you’re not running your Rusty last in line? Just curious. I’ve always had mine last or second to last.

I used to put it last. I read something about doing OD and preamps first in line. Gonna try it out.

Any chance you can post an underneath shot?

Sure thing. My board’s currently unoccupied at the moment- downgrading quite a bit (but keeping the Rusty!)

A friend of mine runs his with the 2->1 plug adapter straight off his PP2 but I’m okay with the wall wart method.
Also, there was a modded Rusty in the classifieds not too long ago- I think JohnK did the mod, basically converted it to run @ 9V so it can be powered with any regular 9V plug.

Cioks looks cool, but I haven't tried it yet. I can't seem to get past the non-standard cables that it uses.

The voltage doubler cable should work well. I know someone who used it with two 9v outs to power his Aguilar ToneHammer preamp pedal.

I bought a Walrus audio power supply instead of the Voodoo, but only because it was on sale at the time for a little less. It's been fine for me, but I'm sure the voodoo labs would be fine also.

Lastly, of concern for me now (mainly due to the way I built my pedalboard) was that the power cable connects to the power supply unit on the side, rather than front/back.

I no longer have my Rusty Box, but seem to recall it used a non-standard barrel size? It will work with 18V by the way, but definitely has higher headroom at higher voltages as I remember from tests. You can also use an inline transformer that will turn a standard 9V plug into 18 or 24V. I have one somewhere but can’t recall who makes it- the limitation here is the power source needs to have a fairly high mA rating, because the voltage conversion comes at the expense of amperage

yep, it's not a standard size and i think it's center positive too.

Center positive it is. The cable I am getting is also a Center Postiive, however one thing I didn't think of when I ordered it was if the cable plugs will be compatible with the CS6.

John, I PM'd you about modding the pedal, would that mod allow the pedal to be used with a regular sized center negative cable? Or would some adapter be needed still?

For what it's worth I have a Cioks Adam (4 ports) for my Pedaltrain Nano, I only use the ports in 9V (two of them can do 12V) but its really great and silences even the most noisy cheap clone pedals I've had.

I personally like the power connectors using RCA, it's so straightforward to work with, I made this little emergency battery box to be used with one of those cables. =)
