Practical Jokes before a gig

Ok, some of you guys need to find some happy time...seriously.
1st, we're a cover band that has been at this for yrs. The only joke that "interfered" with the gig was the power strip that controlled the power to my rig, it only happened 2-3 times before I caught on and it was in-between songs. We're all friends with the bar mngrs. and they enjoy the laugh too.
The Vaseline on the back of my guitar players guitar neck was BEFORE to gig even started....a little whiskey and a bar rag and it's all well.
The sardines in the mic cone was at a party/rehearsal...
Are we being immature at our age? {40's} you bet you azz we are. We have all payed our dues, not trying to get "signed" or famous, each of us have 20 yrs each in playing live, from crappy gig's like playing to bar staff only, to playing the side stage of OZZfest.
Learn to laugh, enjoy life, and stop being so damn anal! The guitar player and I have known each other for 25 yrs, we can and always have done this to each other, Drummer and I have jammed off an on for 10 yrs, nothing better than watching my drummer laugh his ass off when glitter goes flying, and without missing a beat, lock in with each other and rock our a&&SS off.
So this crap about "I would kick their A&^ or you have to be mature in your 40's, blah..blah.....

You damn whipper snapper's can get the hell off my lawn!!!!

There's alot of tightly wound folks on this board it seems. I also wonder about these people that keep threatening physical violence. THAT'S very immature to me.

I'm actually pretty open minded and laid back. More than most. Just wouldn't get a laugh out of it if someone put vaseline on my bass neck before a gig. Or I had to unducttape my case and deal with all the sticky crap that leaves behind. Sorry, I don't get the joke. It would only piss me off. And that to me would be a normal human response.

Playing in a club that we also rehearsed at in the day time, during our day time rehearsals the club owner would show up to do the books, she had about 5 small dogs that would run wild all over the club and bark like crazy.

Before we left the club one day after rehearsing I placed some FAKE dog poop all over the guitar players very expensive effects/pedal board,,,,, we come back to the club later that night to play, the club is packed, the guitar player gets on the stage, as he is putting on his guitar he looks down at his pedal board and screems,,,, totaly flips out,,, yelling,, those F*$king dogs !!!!,,,,,, those F'in DOGS !!!!!!!!,, he is totaly pissed !!!!

He's just standing there fliped out and stunned looking down at all the dog crap all over his pedal board, the keyboardist and drummer are laughing so hard they are crying,,,,,

I walk over to the guitar player and stand there looking at the poop covered pedal board with him,, Im saying wow dude, I wonder if all that crap shorted anything out,,,,, he's looking for a towel to clean it up,,,, I tell him "dude, let me clean it up for you" ,,, I reach down and start picking up the "fake" dog crap with my bare hands,,,, my band members are freaking out cuz they think Im pickig up "real" dog crap with my bare hands.

I forgot to mention everyone in the band (except for me) was very very high when we got to the club,,,, so the fake dog poop trick REALLY worked well because the band had just smoked a few fatties before finding the dog poop on the pedal board.

It was the begining of the first set of the night, for that set and the following 3 more sets no one could stop laughing,,, we made more mistakes that night than than I can even count.

What a great night !!!!!!

Cheers
Davyo

One time with a cover band I randomly picked a guy (the percussionist), turned everything else off in his IEM's and put 'eye of the tiger' in his in ears. He thought the band was playing it, and was confused because its not a song they do. He started playing along with it, in the meantime the band was playing something else.

This really made me laugh!

Really, those who can't find the humor in some of this, or most of it, have no business on this thread. It is properly worded in the title, so you haven't been baited into the conversation. This is in the humor and gig stories and it seems some of you have found yourselves here mistakenly. As for the whole high-school movie response, I would imagine that you are from the generation that brought us the Three Stooges? Poke anyone in the eyes or hit 'em in the head with a hammer lately? Maybe there should be a little "boing" sound when the girl gets shot, then you could laugh too. All I'm saying is lighten up, or shut up and play yer guitar

When I was out of the rehearsal room, my friend zipped himself up in my double bass gig bag and stood against a wall. As soon as I walked into the room, he tipped himself over. I almost had a heart attack as I watched what I thought was my double bass fall to the floor. As I tried to pick the case up I could hear him cracking up inside the bag. Good prank on me.

Again, I don't know you personally, but from your responses I would say you are WAYYY too uptight.
The post you made about kids laughing at a girl being shot is no way related to pulling off a prank with band-mates. Getting my case duct-tapped.....so what, It's a case, it suppose to have scratches, stickers and dings....it's a case, that's it's job. A little zippo lighter fluid and the sticky glue residue was gone.
Have a beer, un-clench your ass...live, love and laugh my friend :spit:

Our antics only happen off stage, or during breaks. My favorite game is hiding my guitarist beer. He'll get a fresh one before the set, have a few swigs and set on the floor next to a monitor. After a few songs, i walk up , grab it and hide it. He'll be looking for it every time between songs (and solos). At the end of the set he'll give up and go get another beer, and as soon as he does I'll put his original beer back by the monitor, took him a few times to catch on.

My keyboardist often times has sheet music infront of her, so during breaks I like to put sheets from a ridiculous song on her keyboard , Last one was "oops I did it again". She gets a kick out of it.

We usually do harmless things at the gigs, but mainly we just have a good time. We do mess with people sometimes, we had a stalker for my last band. She liked to get a little drunk and then get all touchy feely and ask one of us to take her back to our place.... We finally got tired of telling her no, so we told her to ask our band manager saying that he'd be interested. By the way, we didn't have a band manager. She asked us what he looked like, we said mid-20 about 5'9 average build. She went to search for him, would come back to ask us his name which we'd give her a different name each time.... I think she was still searching for "Rob, john, Nate, Ryan, and Steve" by the time we left. She was creepy

We usually go out for breakfast the day of the show, and that when the antics really start. My drummer never locks his truck or takes the keys out of the ignition. I'll excuse myself, walk out hop in the truck and move it out of sight then go back inside. He's usually the first one to leave, and he came running back in freaking out that someone stole his truck... We let this go on until he tries to call the police. He was pissed at us the rest of the day, but thought it was funny by showtime.

I also put someones meal/ bar tab on my guitarist bill at the end of the night, which he promptly got me back for.

I'm in a fraternity and the first night I met the new pledges I gave them our singers phone number with instructions to text him (in italian since he's an Italian teacher) the following:

"may your first child be a masculine child, and may it also be my child"

I thought he would ignore it. However he put two and two together and realized I set it up. He was absolutely furious for the rest of the day but laughs about it now

Hey, if that's what u guys feel ya need to do to have a good time, then knock yerselves out. Your insults won't convince me that its funny.

Hmm, I've listened to your music and am quite impressed with it. Very good stuff and you're a fine player.

Music, like humor, is a very subjective thing. I'm sure that although I enjoy your playing and music that there are some people who don't like it in the least. That's life.

I think that you'd agree that someone sharing a very negative opinion about your music wouldn't be very appreciated here.

I don't know if your subjective opinion of the OPs sense of humor is necessarily appropriate here either.

Picture it: Houston, 1989. Hair band. Blazing summer with lots of sweating.

Bands and road crew used same shower before gig (and, no, not simultaneously). I'm the last one to do so and see what looks like Don King in a hurricane clogging the drain. I grabbed a bunch of toilet paper, stealed my resolve, and pulled the mass from the drain and placed it into the paper (hoping that was just hair conditioner dripping off it). Sneaked the rolled up mass to the gig and secretly duct taped it to the drummer's boom mic just minutes before we went on. First chorus of the night and the drummer's roadie swings the mic in front of his face for the backup vocals and the drummer flosses and gargles with ten guys' pubes.

The rest of the song he gave me death glares of hate as he was sputtering and spitting to get the hairs out of his mouth. I laughed and laughed and laughed...

I believe this could be construed as "just cause" for murder in some states or if nothing else a psychological "trigger" to a temporary insanity plea for a murder defense.

You can count me in among those with no sense of humor or tolerance for this kind of crap, but seriously I applaud your drummer for having the peaceful disposition that he must have had that you are still able to type this story today.

Hair in the mouth = justifiable murder? LMAO

But I agree with you in one respect. 22 years ago I was a different person than I am now; I wouldn't behave that way today.

Trust me, that night the drummer's disposition was anything but "peaceful." Deservedly so. But since he also believes that life is worth more than hair in the mouth, he chose not to murder me. 22 years later we're still friends.

Was going to argue, but I reread my first post. And I agree. And it's not because you said nice things about my music either. :) I was a little out of line with my initial response, and could have left it at simply saying I don't find that kind of stuff funny. I am really urked by the jackass stuff though, and I was talking more about that than what was actually posted in the OP. 3 stooges kind of humor is funny to me (sometimes) like cartoons are. Cuz it's not real, and it's stupid. I really really don't understant the humor in real life situations of poople riding bikes off of mountains by accident, little kids crashing into walls... and I really do think the idea of what's funny has changed over time...BUT, yes, the things stated in the OP are relatively harmless.

I'll try to open up a bit, put some lindburger cheese on my singers mic or somthing like that. Maybe I'll find I'll get a chuckle out of it after all.

I'll quit this thread now.

So technically this is and "end of the night" kinda joke, but it works freakin awesome. Only works if people drink beer with dark bottles... it's called jager-beer.. here we go...

You find the beer-drinker who's had a bit (make sure it's a friend), and when he's not paying attention convince the bartender to top the beer off with jagermeister (especially if the beer is about half-full or less)... :hiding: or just dump out half the beer and fill with jager and voila... best to do this near last call because it will take the unsuspecting a little while to figure out what's up. the look on the face is priceless.
