Sounds like the driver wasn't suited for the box design / or vice versa. If you still want to have another go at building a cabinet, Eminence makes some great drivers (I think they're available in the UK) and you can get some designs for each of their drivers directly from their website complete with required box volume, port size, and response plots:

particularly, the "larger vented 1x10" Bass Guitar Cabinet (which is still only about 1.7 cu ft). I would stick with a 10 inch driver, since it's only for practice, and it's easier to get a deeper bass response without resorting to a large cabinet.

i really like my acme b-1. small compact, yet has big bottom end for such a small cab. the fullest sounding 1x10 i've ever owned, i.e. epifani, eden, etc.
another cool one is the little EA wizzy10. i just got one a few weeks back, and surprising low end from such a light cab. its not nearly as thick sounding as the acme, but it is small, lightweight, and did i mention its SMALL?
you could always try an aguilar gs112, too. nice fat and very full. it is a little long, but nothing too inconvenient.

I personally wouldn't spend that much on a practice-only cab, unless you planned on possibly using in a live or rehearsal rig, or for recording. I thought the Microbass stuff had 12s in it? I've heard the micro bass extension cab used with a walter woods with both double bass and fretless and it sounded great.
