Practice on Very Rainy Days - Slight Rant

So he cancels work if it's pouring? He wouldn't drive to a gig if it was pouring?

I guess what is really under scrutiny here is the importance that some people put on rehearsal. Most put utmost importance on it, others, not so much it seems.

OP seems quite quiet in his own thread. Maybe he was hoping for lots of high fives for his decision. LOL! Not.


EDIT: It's raining pretty heavy right now here in Toronto. We have band practice starting at 3 PM which is about an hour from now. Am I going to schlep all my gear into the car for the half hour drive? Hells yes 'cause it's what needs to be done.

They have no gigs (today or in the future), and from the tone OP's post, these guys don't sound like working pros who rely on the band for a living. Some of you are taking this way too seriously.

I have never heard of anyone cancelling a rehearsal because they were afraid their gear would get wet. Cover the cabs with a plastic bag or go to a hardware store and get a plastic drop cloth. Even though he said it would be different for a gig it still makes me wonder what would have happened if the OP had a gig that night.

For all we know, the drummer just called the OP this morning and asked him to come over, and an hour later the OP called back and said I'm not driving 45 minutes in the pouring rain. We really don't know everything (how long the rehearsal was planned, how serious these guys are, if missing practice is a big deal or not generally, if it was just the drummer and OP, etc...), and yet none of you are willing to even ask the OP followup questions and give the benefit of the doubt.

I can't believe people are sticking up for him. I live in Massachusetts and rehearse in Rhode Island 45 miles from my house. We get a lot of bad weather here including major snow storms. I have never missed a rehearsal or gig due to weather. You are either dedicated to the band or you are not.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, my band has no booked gigs at the moment. We are concentrating on getting the album released and writing new material. I definitely do not make a living off of my music. I have in the past but just not at the moment.

This IS a serious issue and hits home for a lot of us. I've been in bands where certain members always seemed to have excuses for not practicing. They weren't members for very long. It's about commitment, integrity and not being so self-centered.

Except you don't really know anything about the OP, or his situation, and you haven't bothered to ask any questions. It sounds like you have some personal issues that you are projecting to the OP.

I asked a question of OP in my very first post right after his. I agree with you in the fact that OP didn't really add enough information in his opening post. He also seems to be very much MIA with his own thread.

How about it OP? How about clearing up some of the questions and commenting on some of our posts?

I'm with you so the bassist doesn't make the practice everyone else can't continue? and come gig time if they are not up to par they are out!. I see this as way too serious if you aren't getting significant income from your music or have a major record deal in the works now or in the near future chill out the world can wait another day to hear your incredible original songs.

It seems pretty simple, KB. The OP states above that he doesn't want to go because he doesn't want his gear to get wet. I don't need to do a deep dive into his psyche, or have a dissertation on his band situation before I give him an opinion. A little water on a cabinet won't hurt it. Tarps and sheets are readily available to keep gear from getting wet. It's just not a hard problem to solve, which leads the logical reader to the conclusion that he's just being lazy.

You couldn’t keep me away from rehearsal unless my kids are sick. I’ve shown up to recordings and practices with fevers etc…I’m sure many of us have. Driving or rain or driving rain is not a reason for me to miss anything but a day at the beach. But that’s me….Everyone is different I just hope he isn’t surprised if he gets replaced. Everyone has trash bags man. Maybe it’s why they don’t have gigs set up? Lack of trash bags?
