Practice woes..........

I manage a metal band. There are five band members, including a new singer we found about a month ago. The guys rent their own jam space and are trying to practice five nights a week (yes some of them have no life). Problem is everyone arrives to the practice at a different time and the end result is not much gets done. I met with the band the other night and suggested a more structured approach to practising ( 3 nights a week, three hours per night, set start and finish time ). Problem is I don't think the singer is on the same page. He kind of shrugged it off. He is older than the other band members and I am not sure has the same drive. What to do..?

Interesting comment. Just curious as to what you base it on?

Because they often only listen to one genre or band, use the same tricks, over and over, and generally have poor attitudes/big heads. That's what I base it on.

I listen to metal at times, but I'm by no means, a metal-head.

Metal-head or not, the guys have poor attitudes and need to grow up and become real-men already, or at least learn how to be mature.

Hmmm...and would you also agree that asians are poor drivers...whites are racist...blacks are untrustworthy???
That's a stereotype, plain and simple. And it is just as ignorant as the white/asian/black thing I mentioned.
Poor musicians are poor musicians regardless of what genre they are most interested in.
I've played in a lot of metal bands over the years and found that by and large, "metal heads" make some of the most dedicated and serious musicians around. Granted, there are always those who fit your description. But at 19 years old, I doubt that you've been around enough to start making assumptions about people like that. :rollno:
Just my $.02 :bassist:

Pfft. Get over yourself. Stereotypes are made here constantly about guitarists, singers, females in bands and they go unchecked. Anyway being PC isn't metal. In any respect neither this nor your post nor the guy slaggin metalers are in the slightest way relevant to the thread.

See how things pan out with the others first. If they fall into line and become more ridgid with their practice regime then either the singer will also fall into line or you will see that you have someone thats flakey. Which could be a sign of things to come. If he continues with his flakeyness then give him an ultimatum. Your the manager of this band. You obviously have a vested interest or you wouldn't be doing it. You shouldn't have much time for people that aren't team players and could potentialy ruin things for you and the band.

You know i have to agree 100% with your post.

The only metal band I have respect for is "Acrassicauda", a metal band in Iraq (in fact, the only one). In spite of the hardships of finding venues for gigs, and having their practice space under threat of missiles, they strive to play their very best, knowing that any day, one of their members could go missing.

There's not too many metal heads, that I've met, that have that sort discipline and determination.

obligatory plug here (btw, the documentary can no longer be found online...it's a shame, because it was a good documentary):

*rolls eyes*

haha.

i would suggest getting these guys to at least practice at set times, less frequently. dont they ask themselves what the point is in practicing 5 days a week when theyre all showing up at different times and not getting much done?
is the singer any good? if he has a poor attitude to rehearsals he might be worth replacing.

"Metal Heads" rarely ever make good musicians

that's all I have to say.

That is a pretty big blanket statement to make. I am pretty sure that one of the rules of the Forum is to be respectful of all users. I am 43. LOVE metal (along with all sorts of other music) and play in a metal band with a great group of guys and musicians. While I do not claim to be Jeff Berlin or Geddy Lee I know that I can play. Blanket, negative statements are usually not the way to go around here. No different than flaming someone's equipment and gear. IMHO
