Practicing uncomfortable things

Basically, if something is uncomfortable, I see no reason to need to practice it as long as you have a way that is "incorrect", but works.

For example, is there any real reason you're not supposed to use your thumb to fret strings? For me, when I fret with my thumb as oppose to my index finger, my pinky gets a much longer reach.
