Praise for Dimarzio J's.

I recently bought a Schecter Diamond-J with a set of these in them. The previous owner put the Dimarzios in it, but failed to pad enough behind the pickup so they were way too far away from the strings. It was anemic and awful sounding, but after throwing some more foam behind them and getting some longer screws these pickups are monsters!

I know what everyone means now when they describe these as powerful. They're not necessarily a really hot, hot pickup, but they just sound huge. The neck position is fat, fat, fat and the bridge pickup is really robust, too.

I typically use a J/P pickup configuration, but I highly recommend these pickups to anyone who wants to cop P pickup tones without going through the hassle of getting a new pickguard and routing.

after trying a lot of different pick ups i put j DP123 Dimarzios in my jazz Fender and i like these the best...now i am looking for to use Dimarzios in my P.

I use 123's (Model J's) in my jazz bass and love them as well. About 6 months ago I was going to build a P-Bass, but ended up doing a dual Darkstar G4 isntead. When I was shopping P-Bass pickups I tried a DiMarzio Model P. To my ears they could not be more different than the Model J's. The Model J's are definitely aggressive in the mids, but they still have plenty of lows to keep them warm. The Model P was unbelievably mid-heavy, very aggressive, had very little bottom... I was really let down by the pickup. It's a pickup I really wanted to like, but to my ears it did not deliver the goods like the Model J's.

G4 as in Warmoth Gecko with Fender-style neck? Did you do the routing for the Darkstars yourself or did you get it as a custom job from warmoth?

G4 as in: Invalid Link Removed
Coincidentally it does have a Fender style neck; A Status Graphite J neck.

It's basically a 4-string version of their Gecko body style... Although it is slightly different. I did not do the routing, Warmoth did it for me in conjunction with specifications supplied by Fred Hammon (the guy who makes Darkstar pickups). I believe the upcharge was $40 per route because they had to be done by hand, i.e. no CNC program for that particular route.

That's the one I meant as well :)

Damn, $80 for the routing and $400 for the pickups... ouch. :(

Hi I installed the model J's in my Warmoth fretless..super warm, fat and full and are a little louder than a stock Fender. No 60 cycle hum which is nice on a fretless. They are a taller pickup though, so on some basses you may need to lower the routes.
