Pre-amp advice

Hey all, I picked up a pretty awesome Geoff Gould 4 string bass here on TB a few months back and due to some burnt out wiring and electronics I'm looking to change out the preamp... as of now I have an EMG 2 band preamp and an EMG TW (MM) pick up. It's a graphite necked bass so I obviously appreciate the bright modern tone but I'm looking for something to give it just a little more roundness if that makes sense to y'all. I got in contact with the people currently making the Lane Poor pickups about ordering one of those but I'm curious what all you knowledgable TBers think is a good person to go along with it. The bass is currently wired for volume, treble and bass. I think I might want something 3 band but I also don't know if I want to have another hole drilled. So all that being said, what should I do? I have no experience with most of the preamp models out there so any input would be greatly appreciated.

I love emg preamps etc. but I agree with the idea of other pickups for "more roundness". EMGs tend to be too bright for me.

But speaking of preamps. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you are really going for a final tweak in tone. What I"m saying is try to get the overall vibe of the bass where you want it first and then maybe later do fine adjustments with preamp and pickup brands etc. if that suits you.

So, options include leaving the EMG electronics (but not pickup) or changing to something more of your liking. Audere has nice basic preamps that can be bought in just about any configuration you ask for. I presume this is a single pickup bass.

Hence without drilling any holes you can have 2 band (vol, bass, treble) 3 band (vol, stacked bass/treble, Mid) and 3 band with freq sweep (Vol, stacked bass/treble, Stacked mid/sweep)

For me I'd try the mid/sweep first to see if you can find a setting you like to get a feel for what the bass needs in EQ to do it's stuff.
