Double Bass Pre amp location

I have a K&K Model 97 pre amp sitting on top of my bass amp linked by a short patch cable to the amp. As I am new to all things Bass upon looking around most pre amps are either mounted on the bass itself or on a pedal board nearby. Is there a reason for this? or is it just preference, it seemed easier for me to have it with the amp rather than hanging onto the bass or getting kicked around the floor. There are no adjustments I need to make when playing so for me the actual location is not important.

Common sense says it shouldn't make a difference but thought I would ask.

I always set my preamps on top of my bass amp. I need to be able to reach back and make tweaks during the set. This is especially true for pre's that are housed in stomp boxes. I don't know about you, but I'm not about to kneel down to make eq adjustments while trying to hold my bass with one hand, listen for the changes, and navigate the rest of the stage gear.

The stomp box format is really impractical for a preamp unless you never change your settings, you know like a guitarist!

I'm also not a big fan of mounting anything to my bass that doesn't need to be there. There are enough things on it already that can buzz and rattle that are critical. I would hate to have a loose zip-tie ruin my night.

It doesn't make a difference, but it is a good idea to have it at arms length. If you set up more then a couple feet from your amp and have to pick up your bass to get to it probably not the greatest but it's just convenience. I use an Feck HPF and velcro it to my tailpiece, it is connected to the pickup with a pedal patch cable...

I set my Fishman preamp on my amplifier for the same reasons as sevenyearsdown. It has a belt clip, but I can't imagine using it. I don't bring an amp to my restaurant gig, so the Fishman it sits on the grand piano next the little Bose mixer.
