Pre Screening, Audition For Guitarists

Wanted: Guitarist.

Must be beautiful, and humble.

Must be 18 - 28, with 20+ years experience.

Must have stable job and family life, and be ready to drop everything for unlimited rehearsals, travel, and last minute gigs.

Must be willing to make a long term commitment. Please send list of the last 12 bands you've played with.

Prescreening for me is always in the form of current pictures, videos, and music samples. And if they don't have any of that then they don't have the level of experience that I'm looking for.

As for all the other stuff I think it's just necessary to lay out what the needs of the band are and ask if they have it all. We rehearse once a week, all have our own gear, transportation... or whatever else it is that's important. I find a lot of specific questions to be a put off when I'm on the other side of the fence. I'm especailly wary of the age thing. Age is generally about looks, and the pix and vids can show that. And every band has their own criteria, so it would be kinda hard to have any one diffinitive list. Some guys want to jam once a month, get wasted, and never do anything more. Marital status, jobs, transportation and gear can have little or nothing to do with that.

I think this is where some TBers get confused.

If you have scene any of Joe's work, then you know this makes perfect sense for his level of play.

It's an approach that might not be a fit for all bands.

Unbelievable.

From someone who complained rather regularly about not being able to have a chance due to your age, this is a ridiculous comment to make. Maybe you should tell your band that you think 58 is way too old to be in the band.

Yes, exactly. Due to age I'm already in this band by the skin of my teeth and in some ways I alter the image of the band.

We don't need another 58 year old in this band.

I think anyone who fits this bill to a tee probably needs you less than you need him. Without decent money on the line, this level of scrutiny is borderline crazy.

Depends on the band

For some bands that scrutiny makes perfect sense, for other bands it might be ridiculous.

There's no "one size fits all" for audition criteria.
