Double Bass Preamp/Amp Volume Controls

Success! Thanks to all of you, plus phone calls to Rick at AI and Mark Gollihur, I figured out where all the "knobs" needed to be set. At last night's gig I did this:
1. Set the effects return gain on the AI at max. (Thanks Mark - I never would have figured that out on my own. Seems counter-intuitive)
2. Set the master level on the AI at about 10:00.
3. Set the master output volume on the EDB 2 at 12:00 for starters.
4. With the input gain on the EDB2 set at 12:00 for starters, I played an open E string as hard as I could until it squawked, and then turned the input gain on the EDB2 down. Ended up at about 11:00.
5. Then the master on the EDB2 was used for overall volume.
I was able to play at whatever volume I needed during the three hour session. I know this is specific to my setup, but the process you all suggested worked. Thanks again.

I don't leave the master all the way up when I fire up the amp, but I set it there once the amp is on.
Good to know-- that'll keep you safer. Still, keeping the master all the way up invites noise and potential damage in the event of a cable failure. S/N considerations aside, it's a good idea to set the master so that the input level control operates over the useful range. That's rarely with the master all the way up but it, of course, won't hurt anything if you're careful.
