Preamp battery draining when unplugged

So, a little while ago, I bought a cheapo Belcat 2-band preamp and threw it in a cheapo Ibanez Gio. When wiring it in, I had to use the Ibby stereo jack because the Belcat one wouldn't fit through the body routing.

Got everything wired up and it worked fine. Played it a few times, maybe 3-4 hours tops, then had the bass either in a case or on a stand, unplugged, since. Probably a couple of months went by before I plugged it in and, lo and behold, battery was dead.

So, my question is, would the battery drain if I possibly reversed which wire went to the ring and which went to the sleeve on the jack? I'm assuming I'd get no sound if I wired the wrong wire to the tip. Any other thoughts? Thanks!
