Preamp for 1997 P bass deluxe?

Hi fellow Tb'ers. Currenlty my go to bass is an American standard J bass. I recently aquired a 97 P bass deluxe. I love the look, feel, neck of the bass but for me it lacks the low end and presence of my J bass. Fellow band mates have also commented on the "thinner" tone. I've have had all the wiring checked, battery changed etc, so i don't believe that is the issue. I think that is just the sound of the bass. Controls are Vol, P-up blend, stacked bass/treble, mid.
Wondering if others with a similar bass feel the same way regarding the thinness of sound? I am thinking of maybe changing the pre amp to gain that fuller low end tone i am looking for. Looking for thoughts from others that have changed pre amps and the results of doing so.
For what it's worth, i am running the same flats on both basses and primarliy using the neck pick ups 100%

Subscribed. I have a 2010 model and still have the same complaints about the thinner tone. Itsbeen my main bass for a year and a half now and I have altogether made it work out, but I agree the bottom end is lacking. It's great for my jazz solos, slap style, and chords though. I've been considering swapping the electronics too.

Anyway it's not just your bass and i'm interested to hear others' recommendations

I've got a 2000 deluxe P bass and as far as I know it has the same electronics. I find the preamp itself to be adequate but not super, mostly on the treble side of things as , I believe, it's voiced at 8 kHz which it more attack and presence. I'm considering replacing it with a sadowsky preamp because I like its aggressive nature and the ability to have active passive and the VTC control. It's boost only though.

This may seem like an idiot thing to say but I'd consider adjusting the height of the neck pickup if you have the wiggle room. If that doesn't cut it replace that neck pickup! Good luck finding a replacement for either of those pickups, trust me. I like the Nordstrand Fender NP5 at bestbassgear but you're looking at 2 months of waiting to get one. Remember , fender style asymmetrical split coils aren't the ones you commonly see in fivers. The preamp, as I said, is pretty good; I'd look at the pickup first.
