preamp for beta 52 mic used on bass cabinet

I started using a beta 52 mic to feed my bass rig to the house mix, the tek tells me I am not sending a strong signal to the board. I dont play real load on stage so my question is this ,,would a preamp on the beta help with sending a signal or would it be the cause for problems.

A mic pre would probably help...yes. But I would imagine a beta 52 would have a strong enough signal to send to the board. Because in essence, each strip of the board is a pre.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Is the soundman an idiot by chance. He should be able to turn the trim up on the board to get enough signal. Does the mic work OK?

Really? If you like it , use it, but.......
IMO , no really good for electric bass, huge peak around 4k on that mic, designed for the attack on a bass drum.

I agree with Ugly. I would probably replace the beta 52 with a sm57.

a beta 52 has the appropriate impedance to work with any standard mic preamp...
either there is a problem or you need to give the mic more information (turn up)

Possibilities:

Mic is faulty.

Mic with big midrange suckout is poorly suited to the task (get a D4 or a PR40).

Mixer is not very good.

Tech does not understand that the gain knob spins 'round to 4:30 for a reason.

(I prefer a DI in most instances.)

I wouldn't use a Beta 52 on a bass cab. It's fine for a kick drum, but look at the dip in the mid frequencies, then that peak at 4K, then it plummets from there.. You're going to be missing a lot of overtones, too. You'd be better off with an SM57 or Beta 57.

Your soundguy knows that the mic isn't going to sent him a line-level signal, right? There is no reason why the Beta 52 wouldn't be able to send a strong enough signal to the house, as long as it is functioning properly.

The 57 makes a good general purpose work horse mic because it is fairly flat (I prefer it on vocals much better than a 58) but I like the looks of that chart for bass. In fact, that's more in tune with how I run my rig. Big boosted lows, scooped mids, and that 4khz wouldnt be a problem because I roll off my treble knob which on my Ampegs is set right at 4khz. I think I'll have to bring my Beta 52 out this weekend...

With scooped mids on your EQ compounded by the additional attenuation in the mic, all you'll be getting is mush. But hey, it's your tone.
