Hey y'all!

A friend has this Korean made Jazz bass the preamp is not working on it. I'm not familiar with this model so to the point...

What's the preamp in this bass? 2band? 3band? What does the switch do? What would be a good/upgrade drop in preamp for this bass?

Thanks for your help!

Pull the cover and take a look at the board / module...that will provide some direction. From what I've gleaned, it's a Duncan-designed pre with a "slap switch". Of course, nobody lists the control lay-out other than the volume / blend. You really need to get this in your hands so we can do some decent forensics.

On a more personal note, the SD preamps leave a lot to be desired. Let's see if it can be salvaged.

Add: I think this is the layout: volume - blend - stacked treble / bass - mids - slap switch. It's also possible to install the 9v battery backward via the "box".

It sure if those Jazz 24’s had actual Duncan STC preamps, or if that had a Fender version of the Duncan STC.
It should be a 3-band preamp with (as mentioned above) a “slap-switch” that cuts Mid and boosts Bass when engaged.

The Duncan STC preamp has trim pots to adjust how much mid-cut and bass-boost the “slap” setting has.

I do remember (though vaguely) seeing a schematic of the Fender preamp, and have concluded that it was not the SD preamp, but Fender’s version. I remember that the schematic showed that the Volume and Blend were on the passive side of the circuit because the bass also had an active/passive switch.
The SD STC preamp cannot be switched to Passive as the Vol and Blend are in the active circuit.

Fender also put out a Squier bass around 2005-2012 (I don’t know the actual years of production), the Deluxe Active Jazz, which had a similar preamp, not sure if it is the same preamp that was in the Jazz 24, or a lesser version…
